Need More Input

You guys have come up with some good possbilities for me, but im still having a n issue.

Truck fires up fine. I let it run, about 800-900 , in nuetral. Shows temp on the guage.

When i get moving, its almost like a gasser betting too much fuel, it bogs out, and I have to let off the pedal.

I can get to speed, but Ihave to really go easy on the fuel.

Once driving on the expressway, engine fully wamred up, if I give more fuel to pass, truck will bog out and loose speed, i can feel the engine missing, or running somewhat off, until i get back to like 20 mph and then runs normally again.

For maybe 1/4 mile, i couldnt get back up to speed, driving on the shoulder.

Eventually, by giving very little fuel, i was able to again get up to speed.
On another note, truck is much less reactive at higher rpms when already driving.

I have added fuel additive, and ran the bulk of what was in it earlier in the week.

I have not yet swapped the filter, probably get to that tonight or sat.

Can this still be a cold temp related problem?

Definitely change the filter!!!!!! Sounds like you are starving the pump for fuel not over fueling. The filter is always the starting point for such problems due to the fact it is subjected to all the water/dirt from every fill up. If you continue to drive it you may damage the injector pump from fuel starvation Let us know what happens after the filter because next would be frozen lines or lift pump.

I wouldn't wait until Saturday to change that filter...you may be killing your expensive Injection Pump by starving it. It's a 5 min job!

The drain part of the '96 filter is reusable, just unscrew it from the bottom of the filter and clean the inside well.

To me it sounds more like a boost problem. I had exact the same symptoms when mice stuffed my airbox full of under hood insulation. Check and change the air filter along with looking for the intake tubes from turbo to engine being blown off.

Does the truck smoke more than usual when it's "bogging"?

Sounds like a boost or turbo problem to me too. The fact that you describe being able to get to speed slowly if you're easy on the throttle, seems that the fuel is getting through the filter fast enough but you never know. The filter change is definately the easiest fix first, if that doesn't work I'd start looking at the intercooler, piping or turbo, or of course the air filter.

If it's smoking a lot then it seems that there must be enough fuel getting through, but the fuel filter is the cheapest and easiest fix first. Then move on to something else like the air, turbo etc.

If you are getting lots of black smoke then your fuel is probably not the problem-change the fuel filter anyways. Check the air filter again to make sure you didn't suck up any small mammals, and while you are at it take off the intake tube and give the turbo impeller a little spin with your finger-should spin freely and with no side to side play-definitely sounds like an air instead of a fuel problem to me.

Thanks for all the solid ideas guys. I swapped out the filter, was full of crap. Put the new one in, and running like new again, well as new as 140k can be.

Again, thanks to all, this place should be required reading for all Dodge Mechanics.

Fuel pressure gage should be manditory equipment also. It would have told you your filter was plugged.
