maybe lift pump
maybe lift pump
I changed the fuel filter and couldnt get it to prime till it turned the key several times then it kicked in it seems to me like the lift pump is making alot of growling noise. i still am getting the injection pump timing failure cod though but after i changed the filter it didn't have dead pedal for about a day. usually if i get the dead pedal u can turn it off and restart it and its fine. Is it true if u have a bad lift pump it can ruin the injection pump. Thank you in advance
Yes, it's true. Happened to me about 2 months ago. In my case, the truck still ran, it would just take away most of my power. I know you don't want to hear this, but if you're getting the injection pump failure code, it's time for a VP-44. Get a FASS lift pump, and a fuel pressure guage, and you'll never have to buy another VP-44.
Fass is a great product but it might be out of your budget, or might not. There are cheaper units out there that are just as good. Go to the dtr store or go to the vendors page and search there sites. The walbro fuel system is cheaper, and there are a couple others i just dont remember them. Get a fuel pressure gauge to they can save you from losing another vp.
Ive come to realize i budget for one LP and one VP44 every year. So even though the truck is paid for, i have a monthly payment of aobut $120 that i put into a bank account called "Crappy Carter-Bosch Fund".
FASS will help eliminate LP failures, but as the Dr. Evil states, VP's do die with good fuel pressure.

bought my 03 with 110k on it 2 years ago. now have 215k. truck always seemed to lack power. finally after several other unrelated problems with truck i find out from a diesel mechanic that my lp is bad. is it possible i have run my truck 100k with bad lp? what is vp44? could i have ruined my injector pump? should i or could i continue to run my truck like this? i have no gauages and dont really know if this dodge diesel mech is b.s. ing me. anyone live in southern alberta that can give me an honest opinion.

The VP-44 we are talking about is the injector pumps used in 1998.5-2002 CTD's. You have a third gen 24V (Common Rail). Basically the same engine, but the fuel system is totally diofferent. I am somewhat lacking in knowledge about third gens, but Ill can give you the basics.
I personally do NOT think you can run 100k with a bad lift pump. The best thing for you to do would be to put a scanner on it to see if their are any codes...and to check fuel pressure. If you damaged the injector pump, there is a very good chance that it will throw some codes. I personally would not run the truck without doing these two simple things. You dont want to have to tow it if it craps out.
Where in Southern Alberta are you? I assume you are talking about a DC dealership??
Good luck, let us know how it turns out or if you need any more help.
"3500 needs help" should probably have started his own thread in the help section. JMO.
