Major Screwup (me)

I installed banjo bolt on bottom of fuel filter (2002) put in shutoff valve for fp gauge tubing in bolt, ran lines. Bumped starter and allowed pump to refill filter housing at least a few dozen times. Purged shrader valve almost as many times, over 2 days now. Recharged batteries overnight. Still getting occasional air out of shrader valve. Still not even a pop. Is it possible I,m not leaking fuel, but sucking in air on one of my connections? Tomorrow as a last resource I think I will put stock banjo bolt back in. When I changed filter last time I had same problem, but not to this extreme. Any Ideas, please. I'm getting 15# at the gauge, also shut of valve. 2002 automatic, 31k.

I am reading correct, 2002 with 31,000 miles?

If so, that is cool.

Anyway, I can't imagine you having this much trouble, but you might want to try cracking open one of the injector lines and having someone crank. Could be that you are air locked up there. I don't think you'd be sucking enough air to make it not fire over.

Yes, your reading it right. Can't believe how much trouble I'm having. Thought I was avoiding a problem by installing gauges and end up causing problem instead. Any more thoughts?

You can check for trouble codes (that may have existed before your FP gauge install attmept) Cycle your key (on, off, on, off, on NOT start, ON) the codes if any will display in your odometer window.

You should be still covered under the Cummins 5 yr./100K warranty.

Don't sweat it too much, you'll figure it out.

Anyone else have some tips for this fella??

Did you use two sealing washers on the new banjo bolt?
Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.
Did the engine start, then die?

crack the first three lines, get someone to crank at least for 30 sec, no more than 1 min. Once you get fuel shooting out (wear glasses and gloves) stop cranking and tighten lines. Then crank some more. It will start to cough, but don't stop cranking until it starts on its own.
You definitely have air in your injector lines.

More or less had the same problem with "air" Check under the truck where the steel pickup line joins the rubber line to the lift pump. The joint gets loose from moving the rubber lines. Two 98cent hose clamps solved the problem. DC just slips them together, I think they are supposed to be a heat shrink joint.

If you had these symtoms before you changed the banjos that would lead me to believe that your LP is dead. At least that's how I found out mine was gone. Do you have a fuel pressure guage?

Sorry I just re-read your post and saw your FP readings.

He was attempting to install the gauge plumbing.

This like people that change their fuel filter, only to find out they can't get the truck started due to a dead VP-44 (caused by a dead LP).
Sucks, but it sometimes happens.

I am with sealing washers I replaced my lift pump on friday and it ran good all day saturday. Then while cleanin the shop I found the other sealing washer that was suposed to go on the inlet side of the lift pump so I thought no biggie ill watch it to see if it leaks. Well it finally got a air burp and died on me so after crankin like a mad man at work i got it started and it ran fine the 40miles home an i pulled it in the shop an put the othe washer on seems to be fine now . Note to self always check for spare parts LOOL

Did you make sure both copper washers went back on either side of the banjo fitting?

OK, I checked both washers are in place. Recent fleetgaurd fuel filter change, for maintenace purposes, alot of trouble starting then, do to air in lines. But this is the 3rd day of bleeding off shrader valve (no air yet today 3tries). Only difference than before was dropping line that goes to vpp44, more air to run through? 15# at fp gauge when pump cycles. Haven't cranked on it really long yet (4-5 sec.), afraid to burn up starter. I thought was suppose to self bleed, don't want to crack injector lines, something like 26,000 psi?

Is there any point in putting stock banjo bolt in? Could I possibly be sucking air into the system through the shutoff valve or brass fittings from banjo bolt? And if I do change it back, should i pop top off of fuel filter and fill with clean diesel to eliminate most of the air?

When all else fails, return to the starting point.
I'd try to put the original bolt back in and see what happens.
If the stock lift pump is functioning properly, it should refill the canister and purge the air.
Try loosening the inlet banjo a couple of turns at the injection pump and 'bump' the starter several times (letting the lift pump run through its 30 second cycle) until you see a good fuel stream then re-tighten.
That should purge all the air to that point.

Replaced stock bolt. Bumping starter, allowing fuel pump to cycle while bleading at shrader valve. Will keep trying 2-3 bleads and then try starting?
