Knocking In Motor

I have a knocking in the front of my motor at idle, it gets louder when I turn my wheel or apply my brakes so I'm thinking vacum pump. When I drive you can't hear it , and it does'nt get louder as my RPM's increase so I don't think its a rod... Can anyone confirm this, has any body got a knocking noise from a bad vacum pump or anything else that could cause this....

Also it threw a check engine light when I limped it home from work...

Any Help Is Appreciated,
Gino Reyes
