Looking at a new VP-44

Well, put new lift pump in and truck ran great last night. Got in it this morning to take off and started it up and it ran great for 30 seconds and then acted like it lost fuel prime. Bled the injectors and it started right up.....Belched a cloud of white smoke and threw a P0216 code right off the bat. Guess I need to find another wrecker to haul the beast in and get a new VP installed. This one lasted about 80K miles. I believe that it was a remanufactured CZ pump......DAMMITTTTTTTTT MAN

might as well spend the extra money and get the hot rod pump. #1 reason why I dont have a 1st gen truck. the vp44 is so unreliable

Well, Got a wrecker coming to hook it this afternoon and take to a shop in Tarkington. Spoke with the owner of the diesel shop there for 30 minutes on the phone and he sounds really sharp. He knows about this site and says that this is a great place to learn info about Cummins so he can't be all bad....LOL

Well, headed out to the country to pick up truck. I have to pay an extra 400 bucks for the core because the last idiot that replaced pump installed an SO pump in lieu of an HO. I talked to that idiot and he tried to explain to me that the pumps are "IDENTICAL". I unloaded on him explaining that if they were identical, how could an SO be rated for less horsepower if the pumps weren't different?? He could not answer that one. The new guy I am currently entrusting this new pump install said he will warranty this new VP for a period of 1 full year no matter how many miles I put on it. I'll report back as soon as I get her back. I wonder if my fuel mileage will go back up with an HO pump. I did notice that after the last install that my fuel mileage dropped to 16-16.5 and never came back up.......

If you want to get as much HP out of your HO truck the SO pump is the only way to go. If you leave the truck stock then the HO pump will get you an extra 10 ponys. If you put a wire tap box on it the SO pump will net you alot more HP. If the guy is trying to charge you more for the core, I would find another guy.

Truck is back into my hands. Put pedal to the floor leavin his shop and got the coal cloud I used to get with the old HO pump. The edge EZ does not tap a wire, but the new pump gives me back the power I missed after the old SO VP was installed. I actually got a 2nd gear chirp on rear tires I haven't had since the SO pump was installed. The fuel mileage has increased significantly as well. It was a 45 mile trip back to the house, with mixed hiway (65 mph) and local driving (35-45 mph). With my driving characteristics the fuel mileage went up from 16-16.5 miles per gallon to 21 MPG (what I used to get on old HO VP. I know no one trusts the overhead, but mine has been quite on the money from day one. I am one happy camper again, and the guy that put the SO pump can take a leap off of a short pier, since he could not answer my question on how a HO vs SO vs Marine pump are different ( I know that physically they are).

Is there a marine application that people are using for more hp. I know there is physical differents between the so and ho. Kind of curios haven't heard about a marine pump?

scuzman00 10-01-2007 08:23 AM

The differences between the different style pumps are the bores in the pump casing and the electronics.

On another note, the guy that fixed my problem said he had a hard time getting my truck to prime with 1/4 tan of fuel. He said that it may be to the pick-up unit in the tank possibly being fractured and sucking air. He put another 10 gallons in and it primed right off. Another reason to not let our truck tanks get too low on fuel.

SO pump is fine on HO,you aint going to notice the 10hp,and like black diesel said,if you looking to go ballstothewall you'd have wanted the SO,your mechanic cost you,not the "Idiot" that put that pump on there!
