Injection Pump install, won't start
I've installed a rebuilt FI pump on my 93 and it won't start.., I took it out and reinstalled and nothing. :confused:
I checked/ensured TDC and noticed that the index on my old pump when I took it out sat at about 5.75 o'clock, close to a line mark on the front of pump where the shaft is.., I repositioned the new pump to that.., and it still won't start.., it is getting fuel to the injectors. How is the index supposed to be positioned?.., is the mark on the pump where #1 fires? Is there's anyone near Grafton/Yorktown, VA that could help me? I'll pay if they want... Thanks Fernando |
The pump on the 1st gens are keyed to the gear, so I doubt your timing is off.
The key is installed? If the key is installed check the shutdown selinoid next. Is the shutdown selinoid hooked up/working, is there 12v to the selinoid? do you hear the plunger inside it click when you put 12v to it? I found that they will pump fuel to the injectors, however, it will dribble out instead of squirt/spray out. How long has it been since the truck has run last? I just got one running that sat for 2 years, what a pain, didn't want to start at first also. Sounded like it had no compression. |

I'll check on the solenoid and the 12 volts.., I have it all hooked up.. proper.. I think.., the key is in the slot.. the engine gear that holds the shaft disengaged from the main gear while I had the pump out, and it rotated.., so I just placed it back to the key when I installed the new pump.., the timing had been locked with the little tab out.., upon install, I replaced the tab so that the screw wouldn't bind the shaft..., Looking at the engine from the front of the truck, the key index is at 5 o'clock when at TDC. is that about right? I have the oil filler housing out. the truck was running two weeks ago with the old pump.., the reason I changed it was: no power and 8 mpg... |

Yes, the gear did get rotated, that's why I was wondering what the position of the index pin should be, clockwise.

The only other thing I can think of is that you've got it in 180 degrees out of time. You wouldn't be the first one to have done that...

If you have allowed the crankshaft to rotate with the pump out, and the pump gear disengaged, your only corrective action is to pull the timing gearcase cover and re-index the gears to their timing reference marks. Each gear is marked, you cannot goof it. Once they gears are lined back to where they belong, the injection pump gear will only fit one referenced mark way, so just line it up and slide it on the pump key.
While you have the cover off, drive the dowel pin back into the block and peen it over to keep it from sliding out. |
