Hose disconnected off the rear axle
As I was driven back into the barn after feeding this evening I could see something hanging from the rear axle of the truck. I looked closer and there is a hose disconnected, the other end is connected to the top of the driver side rear axle and the other end is draging the ground. I don't know how long it has been off, or where is go to. Does any body know what this hose is for is where it goes to from the rear axle?

Re:Hose disconnected off the rear axle
Looks like the housing vent hose
Does it have a check valve in the end....it should just clip to the frame rail

Rickie,
If your so inclined, get a longer hose and run the end up through the engine compartment and mount on an inner fender or firewall. This will protect the replacement breather from getting plugged. It'll be nicer to monitor the condition when you do your regular maintenance. You can do this with the other gear boxes too, and mount them all together. Some guys do this to keep them from being submerged when off roading. The purpose is for the gear box to be able to breath as it warms and cools, to prevent build up of pressure.
Don

THe hose on my 89 was cracked at the connection to the diff for I don't know how long. But the Oil was full of dirt and I think it killed my LSD clutches. I was just checking oil level and not the acutal sediment and toasted the carrier bearings as well.. I had to replace the whole center section. >

Keep that hose high and dry and replace it if it seems cracked or dried out at all. Small price for big repairs later..

J-eh

Re:Hose disconnected off the rear axle
Don is correct, your hard core 4x4 types all know how deep of standing water they can drive through based on the lowest of their air intake or their lowest vent line. You occasionally see a Hummer or Land Cruiser with an air intake routed along the passenger side "A" pillar. They can take some deep water if they have also elevated all of their vent lines.
An old off-roaders trick is to trim the end off of the nipple on a baby bottle and fit it to the vent fitting with a cable tie.

On my old Toyo I had all the axle and tranny vents routed to the air intake post air filter. Crossed the Sahara 4 times and had about 60 000 real offroad miles in Africa on the car. Body rusted away. Axles and gearboxes were like new.
AlpineRAM
