help...no oil pressure!

hey guys i need some help w/ my '95 ctd. so i was leaving the house and i got about 1/2 mile down the road and the oil pressure gauge dropped to 0. i immediatly shut her down, got out and checked for major leakage...none, checked the oil and it was fine. so i started it up again just for a few seconds and the pressure didnt come back up, and there was noticable rattling under the hood. called my brother and we drug her back home, but i dont know where to go from here. the oil level is fine, and i pulled the filter and it has oil in it, theres no obvious leaks. also i just changed the oil about 2 days ago, but i'd drivin it since then without any problems, i dont think thats had anything to do with it. any ideas? can someone point me in the right direction? thanks

I believe that since yours is a '95 and has a 12v, that it also has 6 valve covers. I would take the first valve cover off and start her up. I think if the oil pump is working properly then oil should be pumped up through the engine and you will be able to tell by seeing spraying oil or atleast oil movement on the cylinder head and you will then know. Or maybe there is another spot on the engine that if you disconnect while the engine is running then you will have oil spray. Good Luck!

What brand oil filter did you use?
I've had a problem with one particular brand that the internals collapsed choking off the oil flow.
If you used an orange one that starts with F and is only 4 letters long, try a Fleetguard or Wix.

The pressure senders on these trucks fail pretty regularly. If you have a spare pressure gauge around, pull the pipe plug next to the turbo feeed and plumb the gauge in there to make sure you have pressure. Then go get a new sender.

Or just get a new sender.

Very likely your pressure sender (this is a very common problem)...Just get a $7 (0-100 psi 1/8" NPT) pressure guage and youll know for sure. If you have oil in the crankcase, youll have pressure.

Started engine for a few seconds and;

1) No oil from removed plug on oil passage at oil filter.

2) No oil to valve train.

Oil pump failure.

1995 truck must have some miles on it. Pulling over and not running the engine was the right thing to do.

Pull the pan and replace the oil pump.

How about the pressure regulator and filter bypass

My factory service manual is still on order from Geno's.

Today at work I pulled out a Cummins/Onan service manual for one of our gen sets that has a 5.9 "B" series engine about 10 years old.

Didn't have a whole lot of time to look at it but yeah, gear drive from the front.

But what about the oil pickup? Guess you don't have to deal with that eh?

How about the pressure regulator and filter bypass. Isn't that built into the filter mount? Worthwhile checking I would think.

all that is on the side of the eng.-be real care full not to screw up which gasket is there and replace with the same as there are several to chose from!
The pumps are big and pretty much more the you will ever need....so I suspect something else but for your sake I hope it is the pump as that would be a pc of cake.
after that perhaps like mentioned the susction tube....broke.??

Pump screen clogged?

If a filter failed and somehow miraculously didn't plug one or more piston cooling nozzles then perhaps the debris collected intermittently in oil pump screen? Lots of "ifs" but I have seen it happen with nylon timing gears being stripped out. Something to think about.

kdgto,

So what was the diagnosis?

Had oil pumps fail and two different gassers in the past and was able to make the repairs and get down the road again no problem, because like yourself I shut down the engine as soon as I noticed a trouble.

Just curious, hoping a easy fix for ya, without having to pull the engine.
I'm sure others would kinda like to know too...
