Head lights went out
Hello, I am new to this site, but I have been reading for a while. I bought my truck last year and I am glad to see such a following of the brand.
This morning about 6:00am I started my truck to warm up. I left the house about 6:30 as I started up the road (with My low beams on) My lights went out. I had my running lights on, so I continued on to take kids to school. Also I checked the Hi beams, and they worked fine while the low beams were out. About 5 miles later they just came back on, and stayed on till I got to work. Has anyone here Experienced this, or what the cause is. |
there is a low beam relay in the power distrubution center under the hood. it may be a relay going bad or some residue on the contacts. possible moisture. the relays are the same between high and low. next time they go out tap on the realy or swap the high one in and see what happens.

The problem is most likely in the multi function switch (turn sig, brights, etc)
Mine has done this occasionally but always comes out of it so I've never replaced the switch. Seems like it always happens when I haven't been using the high beams for a long period of time, like weeks, but then will work fine a year or more. |
I had mine go out but it was on the on/off pull out switch. I had to take apart the dash and remove the pull switch and once I worked the wires around some it worked fine. I noticed some melting on the plug so it's a matter of time :(

Infidel nailed it....the switch is made by Lucas. Known to the brits as the "prince of darkness".

THAT'S why they're called "Prince of Darkness" injectors! |
The best way to stop this from recurring is to pick up an electronic contact cleaner and corrosion preventive from an electronic's shop and really blast that multi-function switch. It is a common problem in really humid areas as the contacts seem to grow a fuzzy white corrosion and quit working until they have been used again a few times.

if you have a tilt wheel try moving it up and down with your lights on, if they go out or come back on its a wire in the multi function switch pulled loose this has has also happened to me. I did know the color of the wire but I have forgot but when you take it apart you will see witch one it is.

Happened on my Durango... It has the same headlight switch as these trucks. Replaced that and no more problems..
The dsash panel in front of the switch just pops off.. Check the switch for distortion or melting before you do more damage to the wireing harness.. I think there was also a TSB on some of the earlier trucks for this same thing.. Gerry |
I think the wire is the purple one on top right the switch. I just crimped the connector and put a little RTV on it to make the wire stay put.
I had the same problem tilt wheel up lows on tilt down lows off. |
