Hard to start !??

I have a '98.5 24 valve , manual trans .

Lately when the weather is hot it has a hard time starting .
It has always started by just "touching" the ignition.
It now always starts fine in the cool of the morning, but once I try to start it after its all warmed up or when the weather is hot, I have to crank it for a few seconds.
The first time it happened , I had just taken a long steep grade pulling a trailer . I pulled into a rest stop, shut her down , ten minutes later I tried to start it and I had to crank for a few seconds before it started. It was in the upper 90's that day.

Several weeks before this started occurring I changed the fuel filter and I didnt bleed all the air air out. It took a little bit of extra cranking before it started. ( its acting the same way it did then right now , but as I said only when its hot outside or when the engine is hot.)
It "feel" as though there is air in the fuel system. But Im thinking that if there is a way for the air to sneak into it , there would surely be a fuel leak in that spot and I would see it .

I can still hear the electric pump running when im in the "wait to start" mode.
The engine still runs at the same temp it always has.
But obviously something is wrong here !

Any help would be appreciated .

Thank you very much !!

Brett

Re:Hard to start !??

Sounds like the dreaded leaking rubber lines, although I am not sure on the over-valved. The engine is hot, and when it cools, the fuel contracts, and sucks air.
Be careful of cranking the engine with low fuel...the fuel lubricates the pump.

Re:Hard to start !??

i'm new to this site although i have spend many hours researching the site i have not found an answer to this question. I am having the exact same problem on my 2000 ctd. the rubber lines were the only thing left that i havn't checked. i knew there is some rubber on the intake of the fuel filter and on the intake of the injector pump are these the only places that there is rubber hose? any info will be greatly apreciated. thanks

Re:Hard to start !??

neither of ya'lls profile say if you have a fuel pressure gauge, just because youcan hear the lift pump doesn't mean its working.

Re:Hard to start !??

I dont have a fuel pressure guage installed. Would I hook one up by removing one of the plugs in the top of the fuel filter housing and read the pressure there ?

Thx.
Brett

Re:Hard to start !??

I sure hope not Mcummings , but that sure may be correct.
Actually it stopped acting up .
Was it the fresh fuel from a different station ?
Was it from pushing down on the filter vent stem to be sure it was seated and sealed ?
Im not sure .
The first time it happened was after a LONG STEEP grade pulling a trailer on a hot day . I may have been starving the inj pump ? I have the engine chipped , I was havin fun blowing by all the trailers on that grade , watching a nice black plume of exhaust blasting out of the 4" tailpipe. I guess I need to take it a little easier on the 'ol girl .
Maybe she was hinting to me to keep my foot out of it 8)

Thanks for the input from everyone .

Brett

Re:Hard to start !??

Look at the fuel line at the rear of the engine with a flashlight see if it looks wet if so have the dealer change it cause you cannot enen reach it unless you have a hoist or trained monkey- thats what mine needed guess it is a major pain for the dealers i'm told --Glenn ??? :'( 100 bucks here :'(
