fuel guage always reads empty

My fuel guage goes from full to empty when I first fill it up.(for about 30 seconds) Then it reads empty till the next fill up. I know I have to pull down the tank to repair it, but never having done this before I was looking for some expert advice. The truck is a 1997 dodge ram 2500 with extended cab. Any help would really be appreciated. :o

I posted a couple pictures of what you will be working on in the following thread:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...threadid=16874

It was easier in my case to remove the bed...just 8 bolts, filler tube, the spare tire hoist rod, and a couple electical plugs. Needed a few helpers to lift it up, slide it back, and prop it up on the rear tires. Then it is real easy to disconnect and remove the fuel module. Seems like it would be very difficult to try to disconnect the fuel lines and electrical plug without getting the bed out of they way first. My sender was not worn out or anything...just very dirty. I put a new one in anyway and kept the old one for a spare.

Re:fuel guage always reads empty

I did mine last week using the "drop the tank" method. It's a fairly simple job, took me about 1 1/2 hours total. If you do a search, you will find information that was posted on the exact steps. I used one of those strap wrenches to get the nut off of the top, worked like a champ.

One other suggestion is to remove the fill and vent lines at the tank, this made it alot easier to get the tank down past the frame rail.

:)Thanks for the help, I did the job yesterday it took about two hours (I had to run to sears for a 15mm deep socket for the nut that holds the strap to the frame rail) all went well.
