Engine stalls when put in drive

Well go to move the truck into the driveway after the wife got home tonight. and when i put the trans into drive it stalls the engine about 60% of the time when it doesnt it lugs it down for a second then its fine.
i took the superchips off of it and it reduced it to were it would mainly lug it down but only stall it about 20% of the time. so i took it for a test drive without the programmer on it and it seemed to be sluggish from about 2100rpm on. so i make a wild ase guess and changed the fuel filter, it was pretty dirty and there was quite abit of gunk in the bottom of the canister as well as maybe 4-6 small pieces of metal(glitter) so i cleaned it and put new filter on and primed it. did a test drive and was still feeling like it was defueling/sluggish about the same rpm range. so i decided to throw the superchips programmer back at it, and it is still stalling about 50% of the time but no longer sluggish.

I have no clue were else to look. except i need a fuel pressure guage. i have the low pressure idiot light but that dosnt flash at all except startup.

No codes either.

I had a '92 Chevy S-10 that had a torque converter lock-up problem that was similar to what your describing. Mine completely locked up though. As long as I was moving, the engine would continue to run. If I came to a stop, the engine would be forced to shut off by the transmission because the torque converter lock-up wouldn't release. I'm wondering if your experiencing a problem that's related to the torque converter lock-up. The fact that your saying performance feels sluggish would make sence if the converter is NOT locking up at higher rpms and stalling because when it finally does lock up it doesn't want to release when you approach idle rpms. Since the torque converter lock-up is controlled by the computer, chips and programmers will probably utilize lock-up control to squeeze some kind of performance gain out of the truck. I don't know it this could be your problem, but, I would concider it. Back when I had the problem with my S-10, there was a wire I could unplug from the trans to to disable the lock-up and leave the converter un-locked all the time. My milage suffered, but, it never stalled again. When the trans finally went, it was fixed then.

Well, that's why I said it was similar. I was hoping it might offer a place to concider that you might have overlooked. In the case of the lock-up, it may already be wanting to engage when you shift into drive. It may because of a computer command or something mechanical "sticking". Since it doesn't happen every time, it's going to be a pain to diagnose.

I think your right about getting a fuel pressure reading to start. At the very least you can start diagnosing from there by ruling out a pump hopefully. Something else, if your truck has a/c, what happens when you turn it on in nuetral or park? I'm thinking it might be something else to help diagnose the problem since the computer will compensate for the load the a/c places on the engine. If it can't compensate and it stalls by turning on the a/c, you'll have a some more info and hopefully someone here who knows more about how the computer compensates for the extra load will give you a better direction to go in.

As much as I hate to say it, everytime I ask my brother-in-law(who owns and operates a machine shop that builds performance and race engines) about what he thinks might be wrong with...insert automotive problem here...he says the same thing..."If it's intermittent, drive it till it breaks and then you'll know." It can be an expensive piece of advice, but, it usually always ends up being cheaper than throwing parts at something hoping to get lucky. It's just inconvenient.

Get a cheap trans/oil pressure guage kit at your local parts store. It comes with a nice long hose and most all of the fittings you will need to measure the tranny pressures. Ditto on the torque converter too! Sorry man, but sounds like the time to upgrade!

Either an electrical problem with the lockup solenoid or a problem internally with the torque converter itself . Usually if it is an electrical problem there will be a code set.
