Exclamation Electrical Meltdown

Alright, well driving down the interstate today the truck suddenly shut off. Tach and Speedo suddenly shut off as well. I got out, popped the hood, and sure enough the shutoff solenoid is down even with the key in the on position. Something electrical went, I just don't know what. Here's the other odd part, when I got the truck running again, the voltage reads 12V instead of the usual 14V, and the coolant temp, which originally read 190 (when I bought the truck), is now back to 190 (after the HG was replaced by Cummins NE, it read 220).

I can't figure this out!!! Has anyone had a similar problem? Or know of someone who has and has figured it out? I'm gonna look into a cable pull shutoff, instead of the solenoid for the time being.

Thanks for the help guys, I can't really drive this thing until its fixed, so I appreciate it.

Need, what did you do to get it running again? Did whatever you do fix the Tach and speedo?

I'd bet you have contacts in the starter that stuck, and melted the fuel selenoid and related wiring.

Pat,

All I did was wire the shutoff solenoid up, and tied it to the power steering line. This let the fuel back into the engine, and let me drive it home.

That did nothing for the tach or speedo, so here I am looking for an answer.

Jeff...It has nothing to do with the starter, in fact, the starter has nothing to do with the gauges going wrong, and the solenoid is probably not the problem, something in the electrical is, I'm just trying to find out what it is.

The starter still works fine, thats how I got it started once I just lifted the shutoff solenoid.

Guys,

Does the alternator have anything to do with the shutoff solenoid or the gauges? This thing seems to be losing voltage, and the only reason I can think of the voltage dropping is because of a dead alternator. Maybe a relay for the alternator. I NEED HELP!

I don't want to be amelessly tearing through my electrical, with no sense of direction. I'll screw something up more than it already is. hard I know, but when theres a will theres a way.

Thanks guys!

Well just take the alternator off and have it checked somewhere. Do a load test on the batteries while ur at it.

Understood, but before I go pulling the alternator to have it checked I want to know if it has any relation to the gauges and/or the shutoff solenoid. I have another truck to use, but its not exactly registered for the street.

My truck had a meltdown also, the starter stuck in the crank position.
it only did it the one time. after that it worked ok. it fried the fuel solenoid(actually the wires started on fire), you may want to check the large loom of wires above the F/S. it may have melted some of those. the fusible links were fried also. So, I put new contacts and plunger(from Larry B) in starter, cleaned up all battery connections, new Fuel solenoid, new fusible links. and it works again. The contacts were absolutely SHOT. I would post picts if I knew how. I'd start with the starter if you havn't rebuilt it yet. Check the fuses and relays also.

Need, check fuses 9 and 12 to start.

9 is fuel circuit, 12 is for Tach/Speedo

Alright, all of the fuses seem to be fine, but if someone has a diagram of the fuse panel could you post it? The fuse panel cover was missing when I bought this truck, and I have never bothered to replace it.

The alternator is definitely NOT working, I tried cranking it this morning, and the batteries are not happy with me, my guess is I'll have to jump it to get it running again. I'm at the shop now, so I have my tools and whatnot.

Thanks Fella's.
