carrier bearing trouble?

OK, guys, drove truck throughout the day, no trouble. Tonight, drove with windows down and as I would come into a slow-down and brake, I could hear a noise kinda like the sounds a helicopter propeller would make.(sounds goofy, I know) Anyhow, it was hard to figure out if it was coming from the rearend or somewhere underneath. I was told it could be a possible carrier bearing going out, but, I am not sure how you can tell. The only thing is that I don't hear it when I am cruising down the road, just as I brake and slow down. Thought it might be the brakes, but, I will let off of them and still get the noise and I creep to a complete stop. Hope you guys can help me out here.
Thanks,
Tina in Texas

Even easier, check the hub caps and wheel nuts.

Re:carrier bearing trouble?

Well, guys, Thanks alot for some of the input. Crawled under and checked out everything you guys had suggested, but, everything looked pretty good. Checked the carrier bearing and it had alot of play. Went to local mechanic and had him check out my u-joints and the c.b. and he told me that it was bad. Couldn't find the part at NAPA or Autozone, they told me that it was a dealer part, but, if this happens with anyone else, I can tell you that I found it at O'Riley's for $49. I did call the local Dodge dealership and they quoted me a price of $375 to replace the part----if I did it myself, the part would be $132. Guess I have my work cut out for me this weekend. :- Would've loved to go fishing on Lake Fork, but, duty calls first. Thanks to all of you guys.

Re:carrier bearing trouble?

from my experense i just went thru with my 96 3500 i found out that the local parts store carrier bearing is different from factory mine had a built in spacer because of the height and the parst stores didnt have this you may want to check that out before you get to deep into replacing them
