Can't get tap started for thermocouple

This may be a stupid question, but are you sure that you are using a pipe tap? Does it have a prominant taper, or does it have a sort of square end?

If I remember, I also used an "R" drill for an 1/8"NPT tap. Tapped very easy.
Get it right by trying it out on a scrap piece of mild steel first before you do your manifold...
