Buddies 24 V Dead
My buddies 99' 24 valve will not start. The problem started after he changed fuel filter. At first it was hard to start when it was warm. He would have to cycle the key twice and let fuel pump run then it would start. He pulled fuel fliter back off sure enough he had messed up o-ring put new filter on primed it but now truck will not hit on any cylinder. tried bleeding line said he could only get to front three. I have not seen truck yet . He is not the best mech.

I sometimes will leave the lid on the fuel filter loose after a fuel filter change. Bump the key until the fuel filter bowl fills up and then screw the lid down. Truck has always started that way for me. Good luck.
|
Can he hear his lift pump priming after he bumps the starter? He should be able to hear it for about 15-20 secs. If he doesn't hear it, then maybe it has gone south. Just a thought.

The first thing he needs to do is pull codes and check fuel pressure, past the filter. If the truck was hard to start before the filter change that could indicate a bad lift pump. however when a starting problem is noticed there could already be damage to the vp-44. There are many symtoms of a vp-44 failing one of the most common is the truck will crank for 2-5 seconds when hot, fine when cold. the truck will get progressivley harder to start, hot or cold and then no start at all.

I am going over there to-nite and see what is going on I will check to see if lp is running and check fuel pressure. As far as I know truck was doing GREAT until he changed filter
|
If he's been living right, it's only the lift pump. If he's been a bad boy, injection pump and lift pump time.
If the LP isn't pumping, be sure to unplug and replug all electrical connections. Check things out with a meter, some have reported changing LPs when it was only a faulty connection. Good luck, RJR |
Just got back from check'n on truck has great volume out of lp will shoot fuel up to hood dont' know pressure. Bled a lot of air out of lines at injectors. getting good fuel flow there also. is there some kind of crank or cam sensor on this 99 that could be giving us fits? also had him hold throttle W/O while cranking we still did not get any sign of white smoke
|
If the crank sensor die's you will lose the tach, and the check engine light will come on. The cam sensor is used for diag. and has no impact on running. In the back of the VP-44 there is a speed reference sensor this sends a signal via the bus to the cummins ecm. Need to look for codes the truck will most likley give you a hint as to what the problem is. Find a good tech with a TEK3 at the dealer bring up the cam sensor and the speed ref. sensor, and the crank sensor, the speed ref. and the cam sensor should have equal values at any speed.

Well the verdict is in VP-44 is dead at 150k.. Thanks to everyone for your help with this problem
