Broke Down! Installing Ball Joints (having problem with axle hitting ball joint bolt)

I have installed new ball joints in my 97 2500 4WD. These are Moog ball joints. After putting everything back together, I have found that the axle where the universal joint is, hits the top of the bolt and nut where the lower ball joint is mounted. Am I doing something wrong? I have checked the parts to make sure I have the right ones and have veryfied that i have. Please help, because I am stranded. Thanks

Is the upper ball joint bolt shorter?

Wulzcat 12-19-2009 12:56 PM

Do you mean shorter than the old one?? Because I think the upper one is the same length, however it does seem that the lower ball joint bolt is a hair longer on the new one. We didn't compare them before we installed them and now we don't want to have to take the new ones back out unless we have to. The axle at the u-joint is hitting the lower ball joint bolt only when we tighten the 4 bolts that hold on the bearing hub and rotor assembly. Thank you for your help and continue to please. Call if you can.
Thanks

Sawzall, cut it shorter.

Have you compared the length of the new ball joint to the old one? Obviously the new one is longer, but why? Perhaps it is the wrong one for your application.
