Bought rebuilt 2500, my mechanic suspects chop

I can return this to the dealership if necessary but I need to know where the vin on the frame and engine are. It's a '99 body on a 2002 frame. Got it for a good price and might have screwed myself in the meantime. Body vin checks out as legit and that's what it's registered to but I need to check the frame and motor.

PM me the last six of the VIN you have. I have dealer connect at home. Just curious as to what it says or if it shows restricted. Did you buy it as an 02?

Bought knowingly as a rebuit '99 with a 2002 frame/motor/tranny/etc. Registered as a '99.
Now just a little suspicous of the 2002 part.

You can return this one to the dealership? Wow, that's suprising, and honestly if it's true, I think I would follow through with it. Perhpas it would be better to consider an older unit with a clear title (ie. not a rebuilt) as the resale value is very limited on it. I will not consider a rebuild vechile, despite what it is. Not worth the risk. I would return it and keep looking--you will get what you pay for. Just my .02$

You "may or may not" be able to return this truck....... was this "dealership" a registered one? A dealer following the motor vehicle dealer's act or was it some local yahoo with a bunch of vehicles on a leased paved parking lot? Was the truck sold "as is" to you?
I'm sorry but ya just hear too many horror stories about people trying to save a few hundred bucks by buying from these people.

course.... i could be wrong.. it may end up being a great truck!

I'm happy keeping it to be honest, I just want to be sure that the whole truck is "honest". Goldenears, my truck looks almost exactly like yours, just a shortbox.

it may have been a "wreck" and some clips were added to repair it.

Rebuilts are fine if you know what you are doing. Most people are uneasy around them because they have no clue what goes into a vehicle and structurally repairing it. My service truck is a salvage title and most if not all people wouldn't know it. It has passed a structural inspection. Resale is moot. You buy a salvage truck alot cheaper. Can't expect to make money on them. My F150 cost me a little over half of a new truck repaired on the road ( my labor of course) FWIW.

...just consider it upgraded

From the options you have a well updated 99 now. Not many guys here have a 99 with rear disc brakes , most wish they did though!

i dont see how you can have a 2002 frame and drive line and call it a 1999 because it has a 1999 cab on it. i would be curious to the where about of the title and its history of the 2002.

most shops that would repair a 2002 with older like parts including complete cabs etc. still would title it as a 2002 not a 1999.

i would run a vin history through the dmv on both vins. you might want to do this soon in case there is something wrong. unless i absolutely without any doubt knew all the information on the history of both vins i would of had them run before i laid the bucks out. buyer beware.

Look at it this way. If you had a '99 and had an accident and the frame was replaced with a new one (2004) should the truck be a 2004 then?

I've traced both vins. Both check out and I've talked to the previous owner about the work. 2002 cab crunched in a flip-no insurance. Bought the 99 with a v10, sold it, put the 99 on the 2002. It was registered to the vins on the 99 body because that's what you see on the dash and the door jamb. And yes, oh yes, 4 wheel discs are sweet. I swear I was getting an ulcer the size of a donut over this so I went back hard to the dealer and he went out of his way to cough up all the info for me to track back. The cattle farmer in Alberta had some tough times 'cause of the mad cow scare and sold off some assets. He said the heat's off the mad cow and he's making money again and kicks himself every day about selling the rig. He told me if I ever want to sell it he'd buy it back in a heartbeat. I told him not to expect a call but I greatly appreciated his help. He gave me the vin to the 2002 without hesitation and everything checked out fine. So yes, I have an updated 1999 SLT full load 4X4 Quad cab short box C-T-D!!!!!!!

Glad to hear your story checks out.

If you know what you are doing and deal with reputable shops a rebuild can be a great vehicle. I've had experience.

Especially these days when VIN's and vehicle history are much easier tracked.

Plus these days all vehicles being put back on the road must pass a structural integrity test, make sure the vehicle is sound and everything is straight.

I've been told that lots of trucks that have been pulling BIG trailers all their "lives" will have major frame twisting and sometimes cracking!

A structural integrity test is an added bonus on a rebuilt vehicle.
