Blow-By

I have some major blow-by coming through my oil fill cap. Oil is all over my hood & fender wells. I have a strange tapping noise that I haven't heard before. The truck is a 2000 2500 with 230,000 miles.i have chocolate pudding in my radiator, but only oil in my oil pan(according to the dipstick). Any ideas?? I hate my first post had to be of this magnitude. BigHead

you might have a leaking oil cooler. its by the oil filter. if you look on the block behind the alternator you will see where it bolts in. you most likely are pushing 60 pounds of oil pressure into the cooling system and blowing it out past the cap and overfilling the recovery jug with motor oil.

A leaking oil cooler isn't going to have anything to do with blowby from the oil fill cap. Sounds like you have compression where you don't want it. May be time to freshen up the bullet.

I now have it at a cummins shop. They think I have had a ring break & some possible oil cooler issues. Sounds like a refresh is in store.

Thumper as originally stated, it is a 2000 2500 with 230,000 miles on it. I have had mods on & off at different times. Right now, I have a CUMMINS tech telling me I need a new motor because a ring on #6 broke & my oil cooler is bad. A friend of mine whom I trust told me he had never heard of these oil coolers going bad like that. I need to know do I need a new motor or can I get by just re-ringing #6, fixing the oil cooler, & doing a head job on it. Can I get by like this? I may even go as far as letting them re-ring all the pistons. Is this a good idea? Any help will be appreciated? I am going to the dealer in the morning, so I need info. THANKS

Well...I would want to est. some things warntee????
I would want to know why the rings broke....you know if there is to much taper it has to be bored and you cant do that one in the truck!! ( oh I know it can be done but it will not work -just ask hoss) as there is no way to sq the bore to the crank which that eng. needs done anyway as the factory they can be made pretty far off. And like stated they will bust off your oil cooling jets and the crank has to come out to fix that.
I dont want to sound like a downer but am tring to save much grief

Let your truck sit over night (dont need to be running it right now anyhow) and go out in the morning and drain the oil (its cheaper than a new motor). Look for water that will have settled to the bottom and/ or metal flakes in your oil. This will help you narrow down your search for the culprit.
Let us know how it turns out.

Look at the oil as mentioned, and send a sample in to be tested.
