Bad noises (transmission)

I have been babying the truck for the past 2 months because of a blow headgasket. Anyways, I start the truck to let it warm up and I hear a weird knocking, sort of like a rod knock but very spiratic (sp?) So I had to get to work and I make it fine. I get out with the truck on still no noise, sounds good. Next day, start the truck and head off and I start to hear a sort of whinning comming from the bellhousing area and its pretty loud. It sounds like a bad roller bearing. Get to where I am going and I park the truck. I did some searching on hear and it sounded like a sticking starter . So I ordered the solenoid from larry B's and starter contacts. Put them in today and the noise is still there.

Here is what I am thinking, bad converter possibly, bad flex plate, front pump, or starter is still retarded. The transmission is a BD, so who knows how good that converter is. Oh yeah the noise is still there when the converter is locked. I am open to any suggestions.

Thanks in advance!

Josh

If I were you I would call up Fred Swanson. He is also located in Chandler, AZ and from what I've been told he knows his transmissons. He did the DTT in mine while it was in AZ. Good luck. * he is also a member here*.

how did u know the whining was coming from the bellhousing area? u put it in park got out got under and could hear it? or are u just assuming?....whining could be wheel bearing...maybe carrier bearing...maybe an out of balance driveshaft...check ur transfer case fluids too....if the truck drives fine and shifts fine id rule out the tranny :)

if the noise is there in park when ur not moving then i dunno maybe the fan?..

You are probably on track with a bad flex plate. That is pretty common on the automatics, especially if they were pushed a bit.

No, I am positve where the whining is comming from. I have broken flex plates in my car before but never in my truck. What happends? Do the ears break off or what?

Thanks,

Josh
