47re is acting crazy

97 ctd 47re ok, when i come to a stop my trans wants to start off in 2nd but when i pull in down into 1st it acts normal. This only happens sometimes. Most of the time it is normal, But today I was running about 53 mph and was locked in and then it unlocked and shifted to 3rd then back to 4th and then locked in and it did this several times so i just pulled over and cut the truck off and turned it back on. I drove about 3 miles home and it didn't happen again, but when i stopped it wanted to start back off in 2nd. Someone please help me fix this problem.

The starting out in the wrong gear on my truck was the Governor Pressure Solenoid.
I have yet to have the hunting problem, however from what I have learned you may want to look at the TPS as the root cause.

If you do a search with various keywords related to your problem's there is a lot to read.

Good info from Whazzup. Most likely cause of the "starting off in 2nd" is the gov psi transducer or solenoid. I work on these things + own one and carry a set with me. On the "hunting", again, the tps voltage is probably off. This can be remedied by spending lots and just throwing a new sensor on it, BUT, I would monitor it with a scan tool, or dvom and "adjust" it until the voltage at idle was around .90 to 1 volt. Another thing you can look at is how much "slop" is in your linkage. 97 usually equates to high miler and I find quite a few with very loose linkage. There are plastic bushings that can be replaced, and if the wear is too much you can "shim" these bushings with a little piece of paper or thin plastic.

i used a scan tool on it and every thing is normal the tps is at .63 but no codes are showing up i drove it around serveral miles it did work properly sometimes. I have changed the gov. soleniod but it didn't help.

Did you replace just the solenoid? or the transducer also (I do both).... Adjust the tps voltage up to at least .90. You can elongate the holes on the tps and give it some "adjustability", but take a look at the linkage too.

just tryin to help

check the "kickdown cable" it controls the pressure in the transmission and a friend of mine had one break and his would always start off in second gear. and my uncles truck had the hunting problem but it happened at 65 and all it would do is kick out the torque converter lockup. changing the tps fixed that problem.

I replaced both of them i will try to reset the tps and check my kick down cable thanks alot.
