I believe 04's were set up the same as mine, with the lift pump mounted on the rear of the filter housing. Later trucks (04.5 600?) had the pump mounted in the tank, and many earlier trucks that had the stock lift pump fail got upgraded to in tank pump.

The pump should run for a second when the key is turned on, and should run for like 25 seconds if the key is bumped to the start positioin too briefly to crank the engine and returned to the run position.

Can you hear the pump run? Can you measure voltage at it's plug when it should be running (after bumping key)?

Hopefully someone who's more of an expert will chime in shortly...

If you can hear the pump running does that mean that it is still ok? I didn't know if they can just get too weak and not get enough fuel into the system but still run? Getting ready to find out on mine in a couple of hours, just picked up a Airtek (carter pump) for 158.00 and new filter and going to try and get my dead truck back to life. Need to buy the FASS soon.

I think they can still make noise but be dead?

Anyhow, as I understand it the 02 and earlier trucks can run w/o lift pump pressure but it will ruin the VP44 in short order. The 03 and up common rail with the CP3 is supposed to die w/o lift pump pressure.

Unfortunatly even if you can hear the pump running MOST of the time when they fail it is because they can't move the fuel any more, not because they don't get voltage. So if you hear it running it doesn't mean it's not bad. You need to crack a fuel line open and then bump the starter to check if you have fuel. You should be thankful that the dealer won't help because they will only do the in tank pumps now and you will pay as much or more for them to do the stock pump as you would if you bought a really good after market replacement. I recommend the Air Dog instead of FASS as it has larger diameter fuel line and high quality fittings at all the connections and comes with great directions for do it your selfers. I have had horrible customer service with FASS even on brand new pumps.
It's easy to check to see if your getting fuel by opening a line. Good luck.

Exact same symptoms on my 04 3500 showed that the Lift Pump was gone.
I replaced it with the FASS HPFP.

I don't think you will get it back to life without a new pump. The idle shows that its too weak to run the truck. Once you try to drive there is not enough fuel getting to the CP3 pump.

If the plug to pump is burned or disconnected the 0628 will show too.
You need a Lift Pump!
