These have been used in gas pull trucks in our area for quite a while with a lot of good results in stock form, This one has been altered quite a bit using parts from another common rear

i wanna say its a ferd 9" but i've never seen one with a removable cover or floating axles. plus the pumpkin looks a little off.

did you jig the axle so as not to warp the tubes when you welded it?

 

Nope and nope, the axle tubes are 3/8 thick and I just took my time weldin it, weld a pass have a beer, weld another pass have a smoke and so on

 

Is that an aluminum housing piece? Whats the weight difference between the dana 70 and what you have there?

 

No aluminum, all Iron and steel

I'm not sure on weight, but this axle has a lot of advantages over the 70 and even the 80, 2" pinion, 3pinion bearings, pinion support, and a load bolt to resist ring gear deflection

 

Is it an eaton?

 

GM, Medium Duty, found under 19,500 - 24,000 GVW trucks, most common ratio 6.17 : 1. An early version was used in the GMC M Series Military 2-1/2 Ton 6x6 starting in 1952. EDIT: First thought was Eaton was used in the 6x6 but my TM shows it as manufactured by GM.

 

Isn't that what would be in like a 67-72 1-ton?

 

I see those all the time under older GM trucks; in fact, I have a 1964 GMC ton-and-a-half that I believe has that same rear-end.

How did you address the difference in bolt-patterns ?? Mine is old-style ten-hole.

 

Not to mention seperate/removable pinion housing and removable carrier.


The reason rears are built like they are today is not because they are better, but because they are much cheaper.

This axle started life under a 67 chevy C20, It is an HO72 but now its a hybrid axle using a bunch of 14bolt internals like the mini spool, axle shafts and som other stuff

Trebor and Bearkiller the axle you are thinkin about is the HO72's big brother the HO110, stillsmokin and me have a few ideas about using that axle also

This is the reason I wont run a 70 in anything with some decent power
