yanmar diesel....... maybe

Does anyone have any experience with these small diesel engines as far as tuning on them for increased power? Having a crazy thought about putting one in a old lawn mower and running it at the local tractor pull lawn mower class. Was thinking a turbo diesel lawn mower would put on a good show. Espcially if my buddy can convince the officials to open the unlimited class again(was too hard on the sled). Engine would be off an old refer unit if I can get one for the right price . As of yet I don't have it in posession but looking at thermo king information it looks like they may have used these often enough to be a possibility. If anyone can direct me to a place that would have technical info on these it would be great. I can seem to find plenty of places to get rebuild kits but have no information about the motors.
Thanks

Joseph

The engines themslves are excellent, they were used in the JD 330 and 430 as well as several newer units. I don't have much more info on the engines, I'm sure someone does.

You'll need a rather robust tractor to put that heavy engine into. Probably an Old JD 400 at least. It's going to be expensive, but it sounds FUN! I vote for a 3" chrome straight stack off the engine, even if you don't install a turbo. What a great sound you would have!

i personally have a 332 and a 430,if you go to weekendfreedommachines.org there is lots of info ,and there is at least one guy on there that has turned his pump up,i myself have thought of putting a turbo on mine, but finding one small enough is tending to be harder then i thought.mine are both of the 3tne variety (3 cyl)if you get into the older bigger deere like a 650-750 they used a 2tne(2cyl),or the newer 970 they used a 4tne(4cyl.)as for weight the 3cyl would be the lightest, there is a 430 engine on ebay right now,and last i looked it was at 250. yanmar also has a web site with some info.they are one heck of an engine,i love em plus you get in some really deep mean grass they will (smoke )up the neighborhood ,yum.

You might look into a different engine than a reefer unit. From what I understand, the way they are cammed they only make power at one spot in the RPM range. Supposedly pretty tough to get it up to that operating "sweet spot" if it's in a vehicle, or in this case, a pulling lawn tractor. Can you get a different cam for them? I would like to see pics of this if you get r done, that would be sweet.

Don't stop at Yanmar, though they're very good. See what's in the Kubota line, too. I ran across a brand new Kubota twin a few weeks ago for almost nothing. I forget, but I think it was in the 16hp class.

Both of these are engines that never quit. I've been behind both and don't have a preference, though the later Kubota's seem to have a bit more power compared to a Yanmar of similar displacement.

You'll have a little trouble hiding the radiator under a small tructor. The 430 is the smallest you'll be able to get it into. I have one and its pretty trouble free. There's a couple tractor pulling sites for the small tractors and some guys have had a good deal of success turning them up.

Heres a pict of a similar lawn tractor (hopefully)
[pict] http://sonnys_bolens.tripod.com/phot...-bolens800.jpg [pict]

very small tractor with cast iron front axle and a tube frame. Thinking that I could stretch and widen the frame as needed to accodimate within the rules of course.

Joseph

Joseph, some of those reefer engines are equipped with a rather broad, extended oil sump that could be swapped back to the std one if it won't fit in your mower.
Keep us updated on your progress... Progress pictures would be appreciated...
