If you could find a 7.3 powered E van that would be the way to go. We have some Sprinters at work and they are finicky to work on, and the parts are expensive. Not sure on longevity, but I know the motors are basic throw-aways.
Have you looked at Ryder.com to see if they have anything? I work there and I know when they sell something it is in top notch shape and most come with some kind of warranty, and they have diesel E vans. We have one as our shop service vehical.

We work on a few Sprinters at work, and haven't come across anything major yet. They are about a pain to work on. Take 0w-30 oil, and is has to be exact, a little over or under and alarms are going off, and not cheap oil, either. One of em had a taillight go bad, thought it was a simple bulb, but the fancy designed assembly went bad and had to buy a brand new one, and was not cheap. You have to buy an aftermarket tool to check the trans fluid.... But other than that, I havent seen anything too major, personally.

Our personal work trucks, we have a 2000 Chevy express with a 6.5, and it may not be real powerful, but its got 280,000 miles and still goin strong. Our other service truck is a 96 Ford gasser 1 ton van, and it too has nearly 300k miles and it's on its way to the junkyard, but it's put in plenty of good hard miles, with very few issues, nothing major on either van.

not necessarily a ford fan, but i will vouch for the 5.4l. i put many miles on a 2wd, f250, 5spd with one as escort truck (oversize loads). it was a pretty peppy motor, in a heavy truck. we had 2 trucks, both beat, and driven hard by everyone. one was at over 200k, the other about 150k when i left the company. nothing but routine maintenance.
