what determines the sound of your stacks?

hey boys ive had my 5 inch stacks for 6 months and i love em...sounds the way a truck should now IMHO...mine are one foot above the cab miter cut...my dad likes that classic look and thought they shouldnt be chopped at the cab

question is what determines the loudness and depth of sound of your stack setup? nevermind fueling mods....all things being equal will 6 inch sound deeper? or louder or what??....what about length? shorter is louder? or deeper?

anyone experiment with this stuff?..

also anyone notice differences (prolly not) between turnouts and miter?.....

just curious to see what other guys have..because i can get a great deal on a pair of 6 inch stacks for next spring but i dunno if it will make a difference....i want a deeper sound (yep deeper still)

The longer stacks will take the sound farther away from the cab so it's not so obnoxious in the cab. The bigger diameter pipe will cause it to resonate more inside.

Mine seem to have a lower basey type tone since they are about a foot above the cab and turned to the rear. The ones on my sons truck are about even with the cab and turned to the side and they are really really loud and have more of a uncorked header type sound.

my HX40 totally changed the sound of my truck... much rowdier... engine sounds "bigger". hard to explain, but it really changed the sound vs. the stock HX35-12

How much taller do you guys think is good enough above the cab, straight miter cut stacks that is? 1 foot?

the problem with tall stacks is there's a fine line between looking really goofy, and being just the right height... 1 foot should look fine.

one thing to consider: miter cuts with the windows down were friggin' insanely loud on my single cab... they exited about 8-10" above the roof. putting turnbacks on it made a HUGE difference... there was no perceivable difference with the windows up.

YMMV

I saw a f350 the other day with what must have been at least an 8" lift, 20 something inch rims, and what had to be a single 10 or 12 inch stack. The pipe was gigantic. It looked and sounded pretty sweet. I did get a pic, I'll try to post it.

i noticed taller stacks can look a lil odd and i figured out why....work with me guys ...if u fill out the space behind ur stacks a bit with a tool box they look mint...but without it they look too long...also i noticed tall stacks look better when the rear of the truck i s alil higher up and u have a tilt ......i love the tilt on trucks with upgraded springs works well with the stacks.....i got em that one foot above the cab and im thinking of getting another pair from the wreckers that are shorter and angled out....NOT classic turnouts i like them actually angled know what im talking about? bent sharply like a foot from the top

I think that is called a "bull horn" type. I have seen them on cattle haulers around here. Depending on the length of the horn, would look pretty good.

I have heard that one stack seems to be a terrible recipe for droning, but a dual setup sounds nice.

Does adding a large semi muffler deepen tone? I read about truckers adding a 51" Donaldson under the cab before the stacks to quiet/deepen tone, but I haven't heard any. In fact, I have only heard one truck with stacks, and it was pretty nice. Unfortunately, I don't know who the owner is and rarely see it to ask how they set up their truck!

I have posted before how I am considering Stacks in the future, but already have enough trouble with my neighbors and complaints (about everything. Living in a small town can really bite. ) The stacks have to sound good, but be quiet!

thats only a 7 inch stack. it looks totally like snip now if it had 2 of them and they were about 1-foot taller ,then it would look alright, it just sits to low for a turnout. mr.t- you talkin about a bull hauler stack??

the stacks w/ 45* bends at the ends are called "bull haulers"

Joshua, stacks are actually quieter outside the truck... especially if you go with miter cuts. with a QC, you can fit a pretty large muffler under the truck before the stacks.

a word of warning though, my interior resonance was WORSE with a muffler than with straight pipe!
