Water in Fuel (a lot of water)

I was recently helping a friend with an old FORD backhoe, (4 cyclinder diesel).

They had worked on it the previous day and it would not start, I went down the next day and cracked open one of the return lines and when he cranked nothing but water came out. Ended up removing 10 gallons from the fuel tank...

They had been trying for a long time the previous day and of course could not make the engine run on pure water....

We primed up thru the filter, to the injection pump and had clean diesel .

When I cracked open one of the injector lines from the high pressure side of the injector pump nothing was coming out when the engine was cranked..

I think they ruined the high pressure pump with water ...??????????

What happens to these pumps when pumping water???

Thanks

If it is anything like the old Ford we had at our campground, they are tough little motors and tough injection pumps, but a stinker to prime. Had our best luck by just pulling the aircleaner(wet bath) and spray WD 40 right in the intake while some one cranks the devil out of it. Keep spraying until it starts to run smooth. Good Luck.
