Turbo Charger Whistle
Just curious about this. What causes the turbo to whistle? Is it the exhaust side or the compressor side? Love hearing the whistle, just always wondered what made the turbo do it.

Re:Turbo Charger Whistle
Its a combination of both the exhaust and compressor side. The high pitched "whistle" comes from the spinning of the compressor wheel at around 100,000 Rpm under full load. The blades pulling the air into the impellor cause the audible tones. Hence, the silencer ring was developed for the 2nd gen trucks to try to control the audible whistle at normal operating conditions.
Also on the exhaust side, the turbine wheel has its own sound from the exhaust being forced by it. Basically it makes its sound like an old siren but , much faster RPM.. This is a very poor explaination, but I hope it helps a bit. J-eh |
Re:Turbo Charger Whistle
LOL...never thought about it, but it must be the intake side, just remove the silencer ring and see how much it increases!
