Transmissions for Cummins 6CT (8.3L)
I've searched on this subject and found limited info on it. I know that a road ranger 9spd tranny (I think) will bolt up to it and should be able to hold the power and torque, but are there any autos that can hold up to the power of an 8.3 with soms power mods? How about some syncro'd manuals, like a NV5600? Thanks for any input you guys have.

Edit: Monty, I'm assuming this is the line of trannys you were talking about?

A local tandem axle garbage truck with a Cummins has an auto, Allison I assume. Most Garbage trucks, firetrucks, etc run the Allison, it should hold, those guys are murder on equipment. A lot of the big rig pullers run the Allison also, with a lock up switch.

I looked at the ones on the roadranger site. The max tq for the 6 speed is 860 lbs. Could it withstand more torque if it were in a lighter truck, like a first gen dodge? Any other trannys that could withstand lots of torque? Any heavy duty autos? It may sound dumb, but I've been thinking about swapping an 8.3 into my '93 for a fun project. Of course some mods would be added, first being the TST kit which adds 150 horse and 300 tq.

Thanks for the info, everyone.
I'd definitely be adding more fuel. Can the older mechanical allisons hold up to more power? Anyone have any model numbers I should look at?

It would probably be easier to fit in a first gen, since it seems like they have a little more accessible room than the later models.

Those yard mules they use to move trailers around lots and stuff have some
8.3's in then and they had an allison behind it. Not sure of the model # or anything, and yes the 8.3 is bigger. We had them with a 5.9 and 8.3 and there was a big difference in size. Good thing about the 8.3 is the removable liners which made overhauling them a snap, just pop the head off, oil pan, pistons come out and pull out the liner. Wish the 5.9 was like that!
You could find a place that sells those yard mules and just browse around their lot, pretending to be interested and crawl under it and write down the model #. Or just email allison and inquire, they would probably help you out.
