tire wear
 
Do the tires wear down faster on the front or the rear of these trucks. I would normally think rear but I didnt know b/c of all the weight in the front. My front tires are worn more than my rear and I didnt know whether to rotate them or if the rears would catch up. This is excluding burnouts and hauling. Thanks for any info.[coffee]

I think a large percentage of the owners rotate the tires . If you do it isn't unusual to get over 100,000 miles out of them . Some dealers , including the one I bought my '04 from offer free tires for life if you have all scheduled service done at their shop .

yes, fronts wear faster, normaly on the tires edges. if mostly in the center, then let some air out. regular rotation will keep tread wear basicly the same

I rotate my tires every 5k miles and their bfg muds. Not gonna get 100k miles. Just didnt know if front wore faster than the rear if so Id take the ones that are on the front now and rotate them b/c they have less tread than the rear. Didnt know if moving them to the rear would make them worse.

you rotate every 5k, then applause to you. most don't ever do it. as for 100k, i never expect that kind of mileage, if i get it, then that's a plus.

at 300 bucks a piece ill do anything to save them. I have Bad wear on one of them from being out of alignment and it has a lot less tread left and I just didnt know whether to keep it on the front or if it would wear down even faster from the weight.

wow 100k on a set. i'm lucky to get 30k out of a set. guess i'm just too hard on em. had a set of cheapys last set 315x75xR16 (145$ per tire) only lasted 22k maybe 23k. but drive the wheels off my truck (when it's running that is lol)

On this size of truck, I'd like to see somebody get 100,000 miles out of a set Bet there might be ONE out of 1,000 if that and ONLY with Michelin tires. As far as tread wear, the fronts usually wear at 1.5 to 2 times as fast as the rears UNLESS you always have a load on the rear. I have seen guys wear the rears out faster than the front but it is rare and those are guys that haul around a large gooseneck full of cattle almost every day. If you just haul here and there on a more normal basis, and not 20,000 lbs daily, then your fronts are probably wearing faster than the rears. If you have a tire that has had more wear due to alignment problems, if you put it on the rear, it will have a chance to get straightened out some. If it stays on the front, it will only get worse.

A tire that lasts 100K miles is one you wish would wear out after 10K miles.

The Michelin XPS Ribs on the front of my truck fall into this category. I have to drink a bottle of bourbon after I drive in the rain, but they'll probably have tread left when my 11 y.o. graduates from college.

My steering tires always wear out faster than my rears. That is why she gets mud grips on the back and radials or A/Ts on the front! (I know pretty hillbilly of me considering it's a 4x4) But man I got 6 to buy;)

OHFarmboy it's a wonder you don't have drive train trouble like transfer case and u-joints because most mud tires are not the same height as A/Ts even though the same number size

WOW! Are your roads made of foam rubber or what?

I have to buy tires once per year, 15,000 miles or so. But I do drive hard, have a heavy right foot, live in Pennsylvania and most of the roads around here are tar and chipped which is very hard on $800 worth of tires.

And, my rear tires wear faster than the fronts.

The BFGs on both my trucks barely make it to 25K miles (over a quarter million miles combined); the '98 wears out the fronts faster than the rears, cause I don't think the 2nd gen front ends are quite as good as the 3rg gens, and the Dana 80's clutch packs will slip around the corners.
My '05 wears out the rears faster than the fronts, since the AAM Torsen-style differential doesn't have any "give" to it, and again I believe the 3rd gens have better front ends.

Both trucks are loaded, used and driven identically.

I'm hoping the new 37" Toyos for the '05 are going to go at least 50K miles.

I run cooper sam 11, on mine and my last set gave me around 50k miles, i was very pleased with them.

My tires are 235 85 16s front and rear. I couldn't see a half inch (maybe...) diff. in tire wear doing much damage but then again what do I know;)
