Shut down the engine at the fillup pump?

just curious if people here are shutting down their engines when filling up with diesel at the gas stations or letting them run? There's always a warning on the pump that says to turn off your engine, but I'd rather not...

If we were towing with the Cummins, I'd let it idle while I filled up. Kept the hot turbo oiled and the Mrs cool. With the Hemi, no need to let it idle. It'll stay cool long enough to fill up for the Mrs. Gas vapors are very flammable but shutting the gasser off or letting it run won't make much difference. Putting the nozzle into the filler, getting back in the truck and then going back to the nozzle with vapors coming out is when you'll go to the moon from the static discharge when you touch the nozzle the second time. Better to stand there with it if you're filling a gasser.

I always let it run when filling ... and I have a big fat cigar dangling from my mouth when fueling . My truck makes so much noise you can't even hear the guy next to you if he says something.

I also (most of the time) let my Jetta diesel idle when I'm fueling.

Never shut it off even if I'm asked to by the attendant. Most people just don't understsand why we let them run. As soon as you explain it they walk away even more confused with a nasty look on their face.

If you are filling at an island that also has regular gasoline, it is possible (not probable, just possible) that your engine could ingest enough gas fumes to "run-away"

If this were to happen, turning off the key would not stop the engine. You would have to plug the intake if you could do it before the engine grenaded itself.

Again, this would be a very rare possibility, but possible.

Never. I always fuel with the truck running, even if I don't have an excuse. I grew up fueling with the tractors running and haven't seen the need to change.

brandon.

I let her run..... Chances of a fire are about the same as me haveing "dinner" with Jessica Simpson, Terri Hatcher and Faith Hill at the same time while the "table" gets struck by lightning.

I always shut mine down if cooled down, but not for safety reasons.
My feeling is why let it run when not using it?
Fuel is expensive enough already, why waste it?

Once it's cooled down (doesn't take but a few seconds to do that), there's no reason to let it run unless you want to hack off the people at the gas pumps and the attendants in the store. I shut it down.
