old ford diesel

My grandson has an old non turbo ford diesel. I think he said it was a 7.3 IDI? Anyway it is a dog. He pulled his 24 foot fifth wheel and he had it to the floor the whole trip. Is this normal for a non turbo diesel??

I drove a 6.9 ferd non turbo, and it was slower than Cecile Turtle.

Take a b series Cummins, disconnect the turbo tube, and go for a ride. You won't beliece the difference.

Older Mercedes non-turbo diesel sedans were the same way...They ran for decades as taxicabs overseas, but were in no hurry to get there......Ben

I had one of those old Ford 6.9 non-turbo diesels for a few years. Pulled a 24' fifth wheel and yes, it was a dog. Did OK pulling on the flats, but get it in the mountains and boy, did it slow down and roll the smoke!

My brother in law had one. Slow as a snail and smoked like crazy.
It was on its 3rd auto even being gutless. 135K. Then there's the turning radius. He had the xtra cab longbed.
Banks advised him to not go with their turbo upgrade without another auto rebuild and beef up.

Let's not forget that old, tired out, poorly maintained diesels are going to be similar as well.

Lots of,info not discussed about the, truck

Year, mileage, maintenance records, 2x4 or 4x4, auto, stick, gear ratio, etc.

There are, countless upgrades today for diesels, and improvements can be achieved.

Had a 6.0 Ford King Ranch DRW with corroded variable turbo, what a pig. Barely made it up a 12% grade with 11' Lance on it. No turbo, no go go.....good news is you won't burn it up, run forever.

Diesel Power had an article entitled Ten Ways to Bulletproof your 6.0.
They'd fly until one of the ten common shortcomings would occur.
