oil filter torqe specs?

I was taught from my pops when i was young to tighten the oil filter with {strap wrench or something else that will tighten it} a 1/4 turn after you get it hand tight.

I recently spoke with one of our mechanics that work on the fleet of gassers at my work place who told me they put all oil filters on hand tight nothing more after the engine runs and things get hot nothing will get that off except of course a wrench.

Is this what you guys do?

I have always heard to just hand tighten them good and tight. This is what I have done on my road race bikes and trucks.

I would be interested in everybodies thoughts on this too tho!

hand tight then 1/4 turn. Dont over tighten it as the gasket can be deformed causing a leak, dont undertighten it as a leak will occer also.

This last oil change i did I only hand tighten it. I have no leaks 6000 miles into it. It will be intresting to see if the filter takes more then my hands to get it off.

I do whatever the instructions are on the filter. Usually with the Fleetguards its 3/4 of a turn after gasket contact. Never had a leak and is tight enough to need a strap wrench to get it off.

I do hand tight, one hand, light pressure. Than add 1/2 turn with both hands!

Always come off by hand...feeling plenty tight. No leaks while on there.

just did my oil change and the filter came off with no effort, no leaks, it was dry as a bone. but but them on tight then about a 1/4 turn. worked in a shop and did thousands of oil cahnges and never had about body complain about oil leaks. i could always tell the repeat customers too, the filter would come right off

I was told that the seal heats up thus the reason for wrench needed for take off. That doesn't explain why some of you don't need a wrench.

Hand tight till the knukles are white. Hey, Im a poet and didn't even know it.

No seriously, Dad taught me at 16 when I got my first car (hot stuff in the '82 Celica). Hand tight, as tight as you can get it within reason. AVery rare thing for me to need a strap wrench or filter wrench to get them off.

I forgot, I smear a little engine oil on the seal before I tighten up the filter.
Oh, and I prefill the filter with oil too.
