new cummins boat engine

I just got this out of the new Boat Test pretty interesting an inline 4.2 litre cummins. I wonder if it will be in a pickup or some other auto soon.

Base Engine Weight 1,275 lbs.

Overview
Review #021804
The Cummins MerCruiser 4.2 ES 300-hp combines the quiet, virtually smoke-free, smooth performance of a traditional gasoline engine with the sheer power and durability of a diesel.

Key Features

Turbocharged, Wastegated, and aftercooled for quick response and superior performance.

New 2-stage injectors provide lower emmissions and noise levels (meet SAV1 requirements.)

New design of the spiral-shaped intake port for higher swirl and better cumbustion.

Advanced electronic control system for optimum performance

Virtually smoke-free operation

Excellent low-speed torque

Sounds very interesting. Smaller displacement, but heavier than our 5.9's.

Probably not really. That would include the marine manifolds, etc.

The base 5.9 engine weighs 960lbs. A base engine is minus all accessories-including manifolds.

Looked it up, weighs 1161 complete and ready to run. That includes heat exchanger, closed cooling system, wet exhaust, turbo, after cooler, all electronics, a complete package.

The outdrive engine with transom mounts weighs in at 12xx pounds ready to run.

That includes a lot of iron in addition to the base engine, even includes the alternator.

Wonder if that would be a loop-hole for Ford to get a round Dodg'es monopoly on the 5.9. Sounds too heavt to be a contendor for their 1/2 ton, diesel project.

Thats not a new engine its the A engine that has been produced for a long time. I had paperwork on it a couple of years ago. In a motor vehicle build it would not have those big hp numbers. Remember the B engine has somewhere around 380 horse in the marine engine. A constant supply of cold water does wonders of keeping temps under control.
