Moving To California with a 12valve
I'm moving to California. I'm in the military so I won't be a California resident. I have a 96 12v and it's straight piped. I'm trying to figure out if I will have to make my pickup pass the smog test or if it doesn't matter because I won't be a California resident. I also have to register the pickup with the base to be able to drive on and off, and I'm pretty sure the base requires you to have a smog test.
I'm from Montana and don't know anything about smog tests/California laws. Thanks |
Just found it on the DMV website. It said that if your vehicle is a diesel manufactured prior to 1998 then you don't have to do a smog test.

The last time I was at Pendleton and El Toro, I didn't need a smog test to do base registration. Since the vehicle is titled/plated in another state, California's laws don't apply to you.

Appreciate it.
catnfool, please tell me that name doesn't have anything to do with arctic cat [yuk] haha. |
Bring your checkbook. I paid $3.45/gal yesterday for fuel.

I was stationed in San Diego for 4 years. All of my vehicles were registered in Tennessee, but in order to base decals I had to pass smog on my vehicles. I realize that your truck is old enough by the laws, just be mindful if you buy a newer one.

My nephew was stationed at Pendleton until just a few months ago with Montana plates on his pickup.
Don't worry about it. |
Whats all this talk about smog tests? I have a 2001 and have never had to take one. Did something change when I wasn't lookin? I'm in Nor Cal.

It goes by the last number in your VIN. Even numbers this year, odd numbers next year. If you didn't get hit this year, you have an odd number, and when they send you your renewal next year it will be there. From what I understand( I haven't had to go yet, I have an odd number) it's mostly a visual inspection, and they stomp on the accelerator a couple of times to see if there is any smoke. |
Awesome... What do we know so far about getting around this? There's no way I'll pass.. I have a smarty.. I can detune but I don't have a cat or stock air box...
