Mitsubishi 4D34 4cyl turbodiesel into RAM 1500 conversion

Hello all
I'm new to this board and would like to know if anyone has tried or heard of somebody converting a mitsubishi 4d34 diesel from a fuso cabover truck to a RAM 1500. I have the engine, computer and wire harness with all the goodies attached to it but am stuck trying to find a way to mate the engine and the 46RE tranny from my RAM. The eng doesn't have an SAE bellhousing, any suggestions.

Could you use the transmission out of the Fuso?

Use the Mitsu trans. Is it a manual or auto?

yes I can use it, I just have to get it from the guy who sold me the eng it is an auto 4 speed and I think the ratios are pretty close to the 46RE in the ram.

Here are some pics of the engine and bellhousing with some measurements, the measurements are from the center section but I had to go to the side in order to show them on the pic. Click to enlarge

I work for a Mitsu dealer and work on those trucks. Thats a great little engine. Only problems we see are operator error. Keep oil and fuel in it and it will last a long time. Dont expect it to be a top performer, but it will get great fuel milage. I bet that little engine would be pretty spunky in a 1500

Keep us up to date on how this transformation comes along. I have toyed with the idea of placing a 4-cyl Turbo Diesel into a Jeep Wrangler for some time. Do you already own a 1500 that you will put the engine into? If not, have you thought about using a Dakota Instead? Seems it would be even peppier and return better mileage.

Good luck with this one...

That was exactly my though, the ram has weight far less than a fuso with a dry box behind it, and still they are peppy. Where do You think I can get manuals for these engines?

this is pretty interesting, definately keep us posted, i got an older mitsubishi 4 cylinder laying around, ran good when i pulled it out

and a 1500 that the old 318 is wearing out in. (120,000 miles)

keep telling myself, when the 318 dies ill put a diesel into the 1500... but 4bta's are so expensive (I can get 6bta's for less than a 4bta :/ at the junkyard )

Went out and got the original mitsu tranny that was mated to the engine looks like a great piece of machinery, I read that some of them even come with a power take-off PTO unit that just needs an optional kit to be added to the trans, I've seen pics online and the cover for the PTO looks just like a square cover that is on my tranny. Will post pics.

I have really been thinking about putting a small diesel into a vehicle for a daily driver aimed at mileage, I was looking at all the smaller diesels around 2.0 L to put into an older 40s car or truck, I am really interested as to see how this turns out. Keep us updated.

will do, but I'm not sure if a 2.0L will move a truck with any kind of authority unless is a small truck something like a ranger. I would say for a truck conversion the best candidates are the medium duty cab over trucks - mitsubishi fuso, isuzu NPR, hino (toyota), and UD (nissan). For cars theres not a lot of choices but mercedes has a real neat engine in the 86 to 87 300D turbo, is 3.0L SOHC inline 6 with turbo chager, that car was the fastest diesel car of its day, I own one and I can tell You it hauls, 147hp and 227ft/lb torque but it does use some electronic controls for the idle and some say that they crack the heads but mines has over 300,000 miles though. A simpler candidate will also be the 5cyl engine on the 123 and 126 chassis mercedes but is slower and noisier but it is undestructible, I regularly see them on ebay with 400k and 500k many of them without a rebuild thats incredible
