Stroke is kind of a problem on these motors. If you stroke it, you need custom pistons or rods. Rods are crazy expensive and pistons don't have real good life to them.

Hey guys, I'm Timmer's friend with the Powerstroke. Right now the bore is 4.11 and the stroke is 4.18. Were thinking about doing a serious rebuild to turn this thing into an even bigger monster. I've only heard of guys going 50 over on the bore. We kind of thought maybe between 100-250 over, and going 1/4"-1/2" on stroke. 1/2" is a lot and I would probably have to get a new crank made which might not hold up with over 1,000 HP.

The block is a '97 7.3L so its got a solid cast iron block. Just looking for suggestions and ideas because it looks like no one's ever done this.

well i havent ever looked at a powerstroke block but in gas motors you can normally only go .60 over before you start getting really close to the water jackets

7.3 are pushing their luck at .60 over. The back two clyds are too thin. All the 7.3 that came in our shop, got the two rears sleeved. They run HOT in the back. Anything over .60 and the wall will come apart from the piston thrust. And 7.3's are bad about cracking the main webs in the outer bolt holes. Check and make sure yours is not cracked. Most of them that came in the shop were junk because they were cracked there..........

My dad had a 96 7.3 that was cracked from the factory.

It runs just fine, no leaks at all. Almost 200,000 miles. I thought the whole block was sleeved? I'm assuming since it runs hot in the back, I shouldn't go more than .50 over? Can I do a longer stroke?

At 200,000 the main web IS cracked,,No the block is like an automotive block, no sleeve's. IF it was a reman before, it might have repair sleeves in it. Man I am not burning you down.....I wouldn't waste the money.
Weak mains, thin walls. Rods are weak. Sorry man..

Bought the truck new, shouldn't there be some kind of performance degrading? Cause it still runs like a rapped ape. I'm gonna tear it down to check it out.

Could just by a new engine, one with all the cylinders in a row and not worry about blocks ever again.

i would just head stud it with o-rings and add some more fuel and boost. also port and polish, i think you would gain more with that than if you bored and stroked it
