Unhappy LP died, but that was just the beginning....

Headed home from work yesterday, trailer and bobcat in tow, and the LP crapped on the interstate. P0628 and P0148 were the only codes. I guess I did better than allot of folks though. I made it to 78,776 miles before the hook had to get me. When I purchased this truck I also bought an extended warranty so I called the local dealer I use for my service and let them know it was coming in. I spoke to what must be the "new guy" because all I got was the “by the book” rhetoric. Oh, I forgot to mention that their fuel system guy won’t be back until Wednesday.

This is where it starts getting "normal" for my world. After a long conversation with the CSA with roadside assistance I wanted to believe all was going to be well...........HA!!!! The call back on the ETA took 20 minutes. The new time line was 2 hours or less for the tow to arrive, joy. During all this I've talked to the wife and she's en-route so I can off load tools. The tow ended up calling after about 30 minutes to tell me he was 20 minutes out. About 5 minutes before he arrived, the rain started. He pulls up and the first thing he says is "they didn't tell me about the trailer and bobcat. DUH, here we go. I explained all this to the CSA but I guess that's as far as it got. After allot of discussion we determined the driver did have the adapter to hook to the goose-neck with the wheel lift so we separated the truck and trailer. With the rain it was probably a good idea because I usually gross about 20k. The wife sat with the trailer and off we go to the dealer.

After dropping the truck we put the adapter on and that's when we found out the adapter is drilled for a 1" shank ball and his 2 5/16's ball has a 1 1/4" shank. He's calls a buddy in the business that gives him a bunch of bs about what to do and that nobody makes the ball we need. I called the parts store nearest to us and they had one on the shelf. We scoot over there and $13 later we're off to get the trailer. A quick hook and I'm headed home, a bill for $100 at the end of the trip. It was a fair price. I especially appreciated the guy staying with it and getting all my gear home. Turns out he’s a good guy with a bad body. He’s married, got 5 girls and goes to dialysis 3 times a week. He puts in a good 100 hour week, every week and does his best by his family. Mind you, he never complained once, we were just talking. Being that my day pails in comparison, I paid him, we shook hands and shared a prayer. He’s on my list now.

As I mentioned earlier, this all started a little after 4 and I was to drive one of the busses at church at 6. That wasn’t going to happen so I made the call to get a sub as soon as I broke. My buddy Scott, (the church call) offered me the use of a pickup for a few days so I called him back to accept. He was driving one of the other busses so I met him at the church to get the truck. The wife and I left the house at 8:30. She mentioned earlier she might like to grab a bite so as we were leaving I suggested stopping after we got the truck. In a single word she quashed that idea, NO! My bad, I should have noticed she was in her “comfy” clothes and the drive-up was it. So off we go. She dropped me at church and left. I met Scott, got the keys, chewed the fat for an hour and headed off to grab some gas. After pumping the gas I realized I had never picked up my keys. I didn’t have my truck and I mistakenly assumed the wife and I would eat together so I also now don’t have a door key. I called the house but nobody would pick up….great. Get to the house and knock, knock, knock and still no answer. I tried my wife’s cell and my daughter’s but no luck, so back to the truck and the Waffle House. The way I saw it, there was no reason to go without supper just because I forgot my key.

I hung out at the WH until about 0100 then back to the house. I have to say that the leather in this For…….truck is not very comfortable. I ended up crashing there rather than waking my grandson and listening to my daughter fuss. Since I wasn’t comfortable, day light came early. When my wife finally opened the door about 7:15 she was confused as to why I was in the truck. That’s when I found out they heard the door but thought I was pranking with them. They heard the phone and called back, an hour later. My battery was dead by then. Even after they realized all of this, they still went to bed without persueing it any further. Yep, I'm feel'n the love.

So, armed with this new found information I’ve made the following observations; Nobody died or went to the hospital so not a bad day over all. The extended warranty should cover the repairs. Don’t have a problem after bed time around my house because if I don’t get up, nobody will and finally, if you are a police detective, don’t worry about your job. My wife and daughter are absolutely no threat.

Rick,

That was some evening you had. I think you handled it ver well. The tow driver with the dialysis has a rough road. It takes a lot out of a person. My late brother in law went thru dialysis and he was wiped out from it most of the time.
Hope it all comes out well, keep us posted.

Thanks Davey, I think I'm going to try and keep in touch with that guy. I don't know why but it was put on my heart this afternoon to do it. I've learned to listen to those things. Every time I do it makes the next message easier to hear and much more clear.

Thanks wiskey. You know what's funny, I never got mad once through the whole ordeal. I was just happy it wasn't more serious. I figured out pretty quick it was just a string of inconveniences, nothing more. I guess getting older helps too, you take things better.

Thats a great idea, he really sounds like a good honest man, which is getting harder to find these days. Who knows, maybe youll get a chance to repay the favor.
Hopefully all is well with him/his family with the medical problem he has, prayers out to him.

The truck problem doesnt sound fun, but things like that rarely are, but at least you can grin about the help you got in a time of need.

Rick,

When stuff like that happened to me (many years ago) I used to get pretty upset and frustrated. Over the years I got held up a couple times when I was really chomping at the bit to get somewhere. Later I came onto pretty serious accidents both times and realized I very likely might have been right in the middle of that mess. Different attitude now and I am more convinced than ever things really do happen for a reason. Just maybe that tow truck driver NEEDED you??? He (and you) will be in my prayers also.

Interesting thought Russ, thanks. Sometimes we forget that we may be someone else's rock and not ever know it.

Spooler, I went by the dealership today just to make sure they processed the work order and had me on the list. Currently, I'm 3rd up on Wednesday. Most importantly, I went by parts and had them look up the kit for my truck. They had one on the shelf so I had the parts guy pull it and assign it to my truck, just in case I'm correct about the pump dying.

So that was you??? I thought it was Mark. Come to think of it, with friends like you two, it could have been both of you.

Hey Rick - sorry to hear about your day, it's frustrating having so much happen at once, and then having to spend the night in the borrowed truck. Ouch!

But I'll second the thought on the tow driviner, perhaps, just ever so likely, needing you at that time. you'll probably never know it, as that's how He works often times, but you were needed with that man instead of driving the bus that night. I'll be praying for him as well, and for you to continue with this proper and excellent spirit whenever you're interrupted again. thanks for caring!

Randy
