Loud PSD turbo whistle

Saw a 6.0-NO Excursion going through an intersection today, it had something done to the turbo to make it really loud. I mean obnoxiously loud and shrill, and he didn't have a load on it and wasn't accelerating very hard. I thought it made him look like an even bigger dork, you gotta at least be pulling something if you're gonna flaunt your turbo. Anyone know what that might have been? Some kinda add-a-whistle thing?

Im guessing it was a 2003 model. Its the first year for the variable vain turbo on those trucks. IIRC they changed turbos on the 04+ models because they had so many troubles with the other ones. Its ungodly how much they whistle [whistle] You dont have to do much to get those trucks to sound that way. Just cut the muffler and cat off and you got it.

I'd bet you are right, I thought the same thing when I read the post.

It's neat for about 5 minutes then it's just annoying.

like stated earlier- it is a 2003 model. they do sound cool-but after awhile, i would imagine it would get annoying.

I may be prejudiced, but when I hear a 6.0 turbo whistling under light load, it makes me think that those engines rely on the turbo almost exclusively to be able to do anything.

Yeah I think so too....there's a guy at work with a Turd that has duals coming out behind the rear tires (probably paid $$$$$ for 'em) and that turbo screams just accelerating out of the parking lot.....it sounds wierd too....not nearly like ours....kinda like an exhaust leak sound. Sucks if ya ask me [dummy]

I agree it is very strange to hear a turbo working so hard when the truck isn't working... Yet another problem with the 6.0. Plus it's annoying.

Are you kidding, I love that 6.0 turbo whistling all I can say is sweeeeeet. (That has to be the only reason to buy one) I wish I could get my o6 cummins turbo to sound like that!!

I saw/heard one of those in a pickup with 6" stacks. It was just sitting at a light and it sounded like a jet waiting for takeoff. I like a little turbo whine, but that would get old after a while for me.

Actually the turbo BLOWS [laugh] [laugh]

^ Sorry I had to. I agree I heard one, also in a F 250, it's retarted how loud they are, its' like you hear a jet air liner going by and the things barely moving.....

I have to agree! The whisle at idle is awesome sounds like a jet taxiing down the runway

Mixer Man May 14, 2006 10:16 AM

Those things are gutless turds just like the old Detroits ......... fall on their face till 2000 rpm when the boost builds . Does wonders for reliability too !! Drive by a large Ford dealership here frequently and always get a kick out of letting them hear a REAL diesel when I go by [whistle] . AEM intake with duals sounds perfect on a Cummins [guitar] ........... they ALWAYS look too !

Forrest Nearing May 17, 2006 05:05 PM

the only good thing about those engines is how good they sound pulling away from a light at light throttle

inline6power May 17, 2006 06:43 PM

only ones i have every heard whistle REALLY loud are the ones that put the gerrett ball bearing on it. it whistles like that at just an idle.
