General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

You can find out all you want about it here:

http://www.epa.gov/nonroad-diesel/2004fr.htm

This is a MAJOR change as off-road vecihles do not often have the benefit of 65+ mph forward travel - facilitating air movement for heat dissapation. One of my largest areas of concern are in vechiles such as Ag combines - where heat levels are already high, and the amount of flammable material in close proximity to exceptionally high exhaust and aftertreatment temperatures WILL contribute to much greater likleyhood of combine fires.

As to the oil - buy some extra, but like ULSD, plan upon changing over sometime soon. Regulations that have been set are not going to change.

I have heard that STP is mostly ZDDP. But have not been able to find proof of that.

Thanks. That's what im looking at now, since it will soon be almost impossible to buy CI-4+ oil. I found the additive you are referring to at Summit. Im probably going to use F1 Diesel Cam break in oil additive... http://www.f1diesel.com/helix.html But it would serve the same purpose. That sounds like the answer....the only reasonable answer to this problem. I'll just blend in some of Don's ZDDP additive along with standard Rotella CJ blend as I go forward.

If ones goal is to add ZDDP (zinc and phos) to the newer CJ oils available, some of the additives out there are not going to do this. Having samples analyzed of many additives have shown ZDDP levels so low that it would not really add anything to a 10-12 quart system like we have in our trucks. As an example: the Comp Cams additive mentioned earlier has tested to have a mere 914 parts per million of either zinc or phos in a "best case" situation per bottle. This low level of ZDDP would basically not add enough to be of much benefit.

Going by memory here I can recall two additives that would provide decent levels of ZDDP when added to a Cummins sump with CJ oils.

ZDDP+ ( you may need two bottles )
Crane Cams Super Lube cam break in additive

When it comes to high levels of ZDDP per bottle I think we hold the record. LOL. This is why we call it "Heavy ZDDP" Adding 1 quart of ours to 10 quarts will boost ZDDP past 2800 ppm of both zinc and phos. This level is for break in of new camshafts only. After break in or for normal use, 1/3 of the quart bottle is all that is needed per oil change.

Additive before and after analysis

Below are some of the data we received from Blackstone labs on Delo CJ oil and then the same oil with our "Heavy ZDDP" additive:

Delo 15/40 CJ: This is out of the bottle, virgin, unused oil

Molybdenum......72 ppm
Boron...............381 ppm
Calcium............1119 ppm
Magnesium........309 ppm
Phosphorus.......849 ppm
Zinc................1029 ppm

The same Delo 15/40 CJ as above with full bottle of Heavy ZDDP additive:

Molybdenum......73 ppm
Boron...............373 ppm
Calcium............1096 ppm
Magnesium........304 ppm
Phosphorus.......2886 ppm
Zinc................3341 ppm

These high levels of ZDDP are only needed for racing, and new cam break-in.
1/3 of the bottle would be plenty for all other applications.

I know of a few farmers who will not be happy as they started using JD oil shortly after Rotella changed over to CJ-4. I recall that JD said they would make CI-4+ oil for many many years as they know that there was a lot of farm diesels that needed CI-4 oil.

I dont know if you guys have these kinds of places nearby, but I go to a fuel and lubrication wholesaler and pay cash for oil by the quart, gallon or 5gallon containers. Mine is Western Refining thats close by and its super cheap. They carry almost any oil you would want. I have been buying Mobil Delvac MX, it is CI-4 Plus and $48.00 for 4 gallons (4x 1 gallons per box). Most wholesalers will carry many different brands too.
