I have a 2005 ram 3500 dually diesel with automatic transmission. I would like to up grade to a 2 or 3 year old model. I like the economy of my truck. I pull a 36 foot goose neck cargo trailer 100 miles 2 times a week. Mostly flat highway.
I understand they changed the engine about a year after mine and the fuel economy also went away.

Do any of you have a recommendation as to what I should get?

I would say post this same question in the 4th gen forum above and let them tell you, you will get a much greater response.

They did lose mileage with the 2007.5 model, but I think it has been restored over the years, perhaps with the 4th gen?

HI Joel--

Most of the initial mileage losses have been restored once the more advanced transmissions came in. And over the years, the refinement of calibration and tuning has helped with MPG.

Given the recent drama over emissions controls and aftertreatment systems, don't be too surprised if FCA over-reacts and demands Cummins tunes for lower emissions (less mpg) to get them more margin against EPA limits.
