How much would you pay for a salvaged engine?

I'm kind of playing around with the idea of going to a salvage yard and finding a 12V engine to swap some parts with on my 24V. I was just curious how much people would pay for a running 12V engine from a salvage yard?

Depends a lot upon what's happened to the engine. If you can find a good one in a wrecked truck, it's 2 - 3k at least. If there was a fire - close the hood and walk on (stress concentrations in the block & components from a fire can be invisible, and deadly to your engine's life). May be a bit hard to just "find one" as people tend to know what these are...good luck.
