How much H.P./TQ you REALLY need !

hey john? i was wondering how or what you mean by monitoring the wear in the engine? other than changing fuel filters, changing the oil or having it sent off for tests, what other things do you do? just curious. and do you tow with your 96? i remember watchin you out in benson back in november of 2007 at that dino day, cant remember the shop, doin some 4wd burnouts, or tryin to. iirc it popped out of 4wd, but the burnout was ridiculously awesome

What you said in your post is what I meant on the engine wear. Like Mark said, I have been trying to watch my oil analysis', along with taking more regular compression checks and watching the blow-by. Also, like Mark said, the engine has to come apart occasionally for maintenance and inspection by Scheid Diesel.
Yes, I remember that dyno day too and it was at "Carolina Auto Masters" in Winston-Salem, N.C.

I've never dyno'd, but my truck has pulled everything I've put behind it just fine. I imagine it's got all the power I NEED. What I WANT is another story...
My biggest concern is going too big. I need something reliable and that I can tow anything from my sled trailer to a 14k gooseneck. Like stated above though, my truck's not much more than stock since that's all I can afford...

Maybe furd answered this question with today's release of it's 2011 hp/tq numbers: 390/735. BUT! Note the F450 and chassis cabs are rated at 300/660. Towing with more than that might be dangerous? I dunno.
My 250/455 SO (+ 50hp chip) towing a 10,000lb toy hauler through the mountains rarely leaves me wishing "gee I wish I had just a little more".

So is the fact that they are putting 300 hp in a 450 meaning that they detuned this engine too. I drive a 3500 D-Max at work that only puts out 250 hp. That's about 100 I think less than a 2500. A friend has a 4500? I think and he said it is only 200hp. I always thought you would want more hp with a bigger truck. I think I am missing something here. Do these engines not have the durability when worked in commercial applications? I was told that the D-Max was detuned in our truck for that reason, I don't know if its true but makes you wonder. Does it mean if you get a 1/2 ton it will be pumping 500 + hp? 390 hp in a super duty and I have 285 in a 10 wheel tandem commercial truck. I just don't see the theory.

Back to my question about hp. I think if you are building a sport truck and want 1000 hp, power to you. I think it would be fun to do something like that. I just don't see why we need 400 hp in a light truck trying to tow the next county behind you. I remember back when Ford had the 6.9 and Dodge with their first 5.9, they were something. The first Dodge had something like 160 hp if I remember, and went forever. To me if I needed something with that much power I would buy a truck with all the bigger stuff. You could get a nice F-650,750 for about the same money by the time you add a bunch of things to beef up your 2500 or 3500 series trucks. Again please don't get angry with me, I just don't see the need. It can't be safe, can it?

I think the main thing is finding a happy medium. It'd sure be nice to have a dedicated play truck and a dedicated work truck. Most people I think are in the same boat as me. I can only afford one truck, so I'm trying to find the middle ground where the power level satisfies my wanting to play, but also is a reliable work truck.

Hey OldDodgeOwner true enough. I guess we couldn't be going shopping in a F-750, well I guess we could but I know what your saying. Just as long as we use our heads and not our ego's when driving these at full load.

A lot of people would claim that 160/400 is enough.
The original owner of my truck thought it was, even pulling a big gooseneck.
Dad didn't for pulling a camper though.
I didn't think 230/650 or so Banks rates the uprated version with thier kit was enough to drive around town . . .go figure.

I guess it really comes down to this:
Would you rather have 160hp/400tq and be flooring it to get a load moving or 400hp/800tq and be able to use half throttle to do the same? Which becomes more reliable??? All comes down to preferences, just because you have xxhp and xxtq doesn't mean you have to exercise it all, all the time. Its just good to have that extra juice on tap if you have to have it (and that need has arose for me several times) to get out of harms way.

The real question is coming up with a reasonable number and being happy with it later on. I JUST WANNA GO FAST comes to mind. But as long as the money tree keeps growing in the backyard keep seeing what she'll take right?

Dennis, thanks for posting that picture! I had forgotten just how long those marks really were. I let off the throttle at the top of the hill too!
