Heard A Rumour For 2005

Talked to my nephew who drives truck. He was in getting his truck worked on and seen a Cummins rep & a Volvo rep checking a new motor they are testing in a V olvo class 8.It's a Cummins 18 litre all aluminum quad cam with twin turbo's.It's rated at 660 hp & 5,000 lb. ft. torque. It's mated to a 21 speed alison auto. Comes with a 5 million mile warranty. The driver who run's this combo says it pulls the mountains with a loaded set of B's like there were no B's.Motor was really quiet and excellent fuel mileage. The Cummins rep also told my nephew they are also going to produce a scaled down version of this engine @ Dodges request to compete. It's going to be 390 hp,quad cam all alum. with a set of twins.Sure sounds pretty promising for the future.....

Re:Heard A Rumour For 2005

Maybe you could do a three-cam engine-- two for the valve, one for the injectors? Not likely since the days of cam-activated injectors are over...

I think he meant two for the engine, and one for the drivers side window and one for the passenger side window.

Re:Heard A Rumour For 2005

I thought the new N14's and ISX engines still had cam actuated injectors with electronic timing?

I know for a fact that the 60 series Detroit is still cam actuated.

All the 3406 based Cat engines all run off the cam.

Re:Heard A Rumour For 2005

I know it sound wild but my nephew was right there when cummins rep was going over everything with mech. whose going to be servicing the motor. He also said the quad cams are all gear driven. He never seen a head so wide. The only worry cummins had was if the valves would hold out. They will be monitoring the motor for that.Yes it is a inline six.Cummins said this motor is so advanced it take a couple of years for the comp.to catch up.They been working on this design for over 4 yrs.

sticking my neck out here...
What about a camless engine?? All valves activated electronically? Imagine the timing capabilities...
I thought cummins was working on something like this. Could be wrong though...

Re:Heard A Rumour For 2005

I wanted to patent that about 8 years ago, then found out it had already been done. :'( A guy had a small block Chevy dyno mule motor up and running. Problems were: #1 making the actuators compact enough and reliable. #2 power needed for the actuators was high, so controlling them required expensive electronic bits. #3 really expensive.
It won't happen on a production basis for quite a while yet, but it will happen eventually. The enviro-marxists will cram through some regulations requiring engines to emit cleaner air than they ingest while using no fuel at all, and we'll have to use it no matter how expensive it is. >
