Giving diesel a bad name.
Several good points have been raised by both sides of the issue. There is one point not raised yet.
I wonder what king of a field day a good attorney would have when his client explains how he couldn't see the road and crashes his motorcycle/car/bike into something or fears that something had come off of or fallen from one of our trucks and loses control of their vehicle. Then when they go on and explain how the truck doesn't comply with EPA regulations and has been modified I think we can all figure out how a jury would vote.
I'm also guilty of toasting a few tailgaiters so I'm not a saint either. It's just hearing a few of the stories above that make me think more and get a little more nervous/conservative as I get older. I can always smoke it as much as I like down our lane/driveway and at the pulls. There are places and times. Just my 2 cents worth too.

No field day at all-how the hell are they gonna get your tag number when they can't even see where they're going? Tag numbers also tend to get forgotten whilst cartwheeling over the handlebars into the ditch or extricating oneself from the dashboard.
Ok, I was kidding, but you see what I mean...
I share the road with Bicyclists as long as there singled up. I can not stand it when there 3-4+ wide taking up half of the road, that is a safety issue for me and them! I use to smoke them but I have found that my AIRHORNS are much more effective, scarring them ********, domino effect, you get the idea. I understand bicyclists rights, but I don't recall where it says they can take up as much as the road as they want, run stop signs, stoplights (as mentioned by Blue), turn in front of you and just expect that they always have the right away no matter what.
Here's another perspective, an actual event that my old boss in college was way-too involved in. He was and is an avid cyclist, a safe and curtious individual. While riding on an empty country 2-lane road around 6-pm, he heard an ONCOMING car, before he could even fully look up, he was struck by a red car of unknown description. He literally went from riding along the edge of the road to tossed into a field, past a ditch, within a fraction of a second.
He managed somehow to pick himself up, found some of the pieces of his bike and started hobbling back toward town, wounded and bleeding. He was picked up a few minuites later and rushed to the emergency room. It took almost 6-months to recover fully, and the driver who hit him was never found, never confessed, maybe never even noticed.
The point is: He was nearly killed in an instant, the person who hit him either didn't even know or cared so little they simply chose to deny wrongdoing, and he had not done anything wrong. We all make mistakes, but if we try to keep ourselves at least somewhat others-centered instead of the other way around, life in general works much better.

With stacks on my truck its pretty easy to haze the traffic behind me. When I get on the freeway or leaving a stop sign I try and control the haze or smoke as much as I can.. That also is true when I am in front of motorcycles or bicycles. But on the other hand when I get tail gated...I dont worry about the haze...it goes directly to smoke. The smoke rolls out of the stacks right over the tailgate and right into the windshield. You know for some reason they decided that they dont want to drive that close...

Well, I think bicycle riding is just super, if that's what folks really want to spend their time doing. But for God's sake, use some sense as to where and when you ride. Nothing steams me more than creeping along in morning traffic on a busy two lane road cause some streamlined little F'r wants to ride on the inside edge of the white line, and all the soccer moms are too scared to pass him. Talk about inconsiderate. Hell, I'd like to weld me up a steel towing mirror on that side just for a couple of them in particular. Ride them on neighborhood streets, in the park, on bike trails, whatever, but not on a busy main road with no bike lane. You're asking to get killed, and it shouldn't be the motorist's fault when it happens in that circumstance. A bicycle is NOT simply another vehicle entitled to all the rights of the road, no matter what some legislator wants to call it. Lots of smoke should be mandatory in those situations.
Anybody ever try throwing money at they guy on the way past him
I mean that much smoke, unburnt fuel. So your wasting fuel for no reason? i agree some of the people here are rude, this and that, some of the guys on bikes can pass the cars here too
. I always put it in perspective, like that show with the kid who hits the 2x4 sticking out of the guys truck and dies. There's a time and place for everything. If they do something wrong, yell at them or honk (especially if you have an air horn) but to do something to the health of them, that will always win over in court over right of way. Just the other day some girl was drowning off of point judith here in Rhode Island, some fisherman dives in to save this girl and hits his head on a submerged rock and breaks his neck, some other guys saves the girl. This guy gave his life trying to save a girl he never knew. You never know what happens in life or who the guy on the bike was (could have been the judge at the court you would have gone too) Tell me who wins when the judge is the guy on the bike.
I'm always fair to everybody, you never know when or who you will cross in life, guy could be a doctor about to do surgery on your wife, bet you'd be kissin his feet then. like dogs don't bite the hands that feed them, never burn a bridge till you are across it (or own a boat)

Saturday I watched a guy show off his stacks by driving down main street and about every half block mashing the fuel, leaving huge clouds of black... They hung in the air for a long time...
Guess how they will vote when asked about diesel regulation?

How did this become a bike thread
IMO, Smoking people out for the fun of it is retarded
Although, if your riding my bumper for no reason look out! I will admit, even when that happens, the little voice inside me says "you shouldnt do that, you might end up wreckin him", but it happens time to time.
Otherwise, I think if you smoke easy, you gotta learn to control the go-go pedal and use your noodle

Ask Lance Armstrong about getting run over by pickup trucks when riding. He has taken a few spills because of them. And I can't believe he would ride very slow. And he has more than a few miles under his belt, so he probably knows the rules of the road.
Man, I don't like to see any smoke from diesels. Everyone complains about the 2007 regulations, but how many of us kept our pre 2007 engines clean ? And how many nitwits do we have out there blowing as much smoke as they can anytime they can. I can't say I blame Joe public for wanting cleaner diesels, based on what they see on the street.
Cycling is cool. America has a weight problem and an oil problem. Cycling helps both. I think we should be more tolerant.
When was the last time any of you went anywhere on a bike ?

It may be just because I'm from a po dunk little <edit> town but to me smoke it cool. I mean in my town everything is loud.Gassers with straight pipes (my last one did) or very short glass packs and I can't think of one person that runs a muffler or cat on a diesel.
If it can blow smoke we blow it on everybody but like I said I live in a little town. That and around here girls like the smoke and the sound of manual cause around here it's a auto diesel it just ant cool.I don't kow why people just look at you if you says its an auto.

I don’t see any sense in blowing a bunch of smoke on the street….to me it just means your air/fuel mix is out of whack and it’s one more reason why we have restrictive smog regs. If you are seriously into racing and doing it on the track that’s something different…nobody complains about Jeff Gordon polluting or getting bad MPG’s a Daytona…lol.
When I see a truck belching smoke on the street I figure that’s the same guy who throws his Big Mac wrapper out the window.

Did it look cool? Not even from my CTD.
