ford Torqshift 5R110 behind the cummins in our trucks?

well... my friend mentioned that he saw a site that talked about swapping a Cummins into a Ford truck. these guys have kits that allow you to put the 3rd gen CRD motors into new and old trucks. but theyve got a way to hook up our motors to the stock ford trannies using adaptors, standalone controllers and mounts.

i dont like automatics... especially when they need to be built to handle 600rwtq. i Dont like the idea of paying $2500 just to rebuild a 47RE. i dont like the idea of having to shell out $1500 just for a torque converter for the 47RE either. i originally thought that when my 47RE takes a crap on me... id just do a NV4500 swap. but after reading about someone's conversion, it ended up costing nearly as much as a built auto anyways. so if it costs the same, it basically boils down to personal preference. but... what if i can put a 5 speed automatic behind my 12v that can handle 600rwtq in STOCK FORMAT which is far superiour to the 47RE for LESS than what a rebuild and TC costs... why wouldnt i?

has anyone else heard of or known of anyone putting a 5R110/Torqshift from a 6.0 PSD truck into one of our trucks?

i have a feeling i can do it for less than what a 47RE rebuild and billet single disc TC costs.

regards
chris

I put a valvebody alone in my 47re and it held 990+ torque for well over 30k miles and the tranny had already had 80k miles on it before I put it in. The 47re's are a lot tougher than people make them out to be if your smart about driving them. Don't lug it, don't go real heavy throttle at real low rpm's, don't full throttle it everywhere, just be sensible about it and you'll be just fine.

well i shouldnt have too much trouble in the lugging department or hard usage since i have a lighter truck than most here.

im just afraid of putting a valve body on my stock tranny w/ unknown mileage and finding out that the trans itself has internal leakage thats going to kill my TC clutches. right now, my stock trans feels fine when there are no electrical gremlins. i think its mechanically sound. but when i do a fuel plate and 3K GSK... id really hate for the tranny to take a hit.

It won't work without serious electronics. The 5R110-equipped trucks have a TCM (trans. control module) that is seperate from the PCM (powertrain control module). I looked into putting a 12V into my 04 F350 after the 6.0 blew up, but nobody had a standalone trans controller at that time (or now).

sorry!

If the TCM is seperate, why do you need a stand alone trans controller? I am thinking all you need is the proper inputs to make the trans control module happy. Probably needs rpm input and ...? Just thinking aloud here...

If you think the 47RE is expensive, price a 5R110.

Q for Tranny Techs out there...

Stupid question: Does a 48RE swap out for a 47RE? Mechanically you'd think it should, not sure about the electronics. But my guess is they would too.

I would imagine so. The electronics appear to be the same. Just have to get an early one that uses the cable.
