Ford gas? Now wait a minute!
What about that brand new Scorpion diesel we've been hearing about. You know, the one with all that power that has been so well tested, etc?
Now Ford is bragging that they have a gas engine in their bigger trucks and also a Cummins available. As the article says, it's a variation of the same one in the RAM pickups.
So, hows that diesel thing going?

They have offered the Cummins 5.9L for quite a while in the F650 & up chassis. They used to offer a Cat engine as well until Cat decided to get out of the on-highway engine business.

I've got a buddy w/ an 02 F350, crewcab long bed srw. Best fuel mileage hes ever gotten is 12mpg!
I try not to spend too much time bashing other brands or engines...but it just seems like a no-brainer with gas vs. diesel.

I got a buddy that is standing in line to buy two of them right now, will be used as roll back tow trucks. The lower initial cost, cheaper maint. and cheaper fuel off sets the mileage and unless your driving a hino the diesel trucks in that category don't get that much better fuel mileage. A few years ago he traded in a 5500 with the d max for a 45oo with a 8.1, says it was the best decision he has ever made.

Not to be a jerk....
If I were to buy another 550 class ford, it would have the v10 gas. the diesel is a problematic, fuel guzzling pile of..... anyway.
Seriously, I know a bunch of guys who have gone back to gassers in these medium duty trucks, for the same reasons listed above. cheaper to buy, cheaper to maintain, and in many cases, they get better fuel economy too.
pretty sad state of affairs. If dodge had offered a 5500 option, before the egr/dpf engine came out, I probably would have gone with them, as it is, I won't go with the DPF engine, due to the cold operating temps in the winter, and the engine getting a wee bit tempermental about it.

Given how much the new SCR systems are going to cost this is a good way to be able to offer an affordable medium duty truck. It is not going to be the most powerful thing in the world but the V-10 fords aren't bad engines. Also I would imagine this would be popular for C-Class motorhomes drivers who don't want to worry about the maintenance of a diesel.

It will be interesting to see if Ford offers their PowerChoke in the F-650 this year. There engine disapeared when the 6.0 boat anchor was invented, and the 6.4 ship anchor was invented.

Does anybody know if the V-10 has had the same problem as the 5.4 v8 with spark plugs popping out of the head ? since the 5.4 is essentially the V-10 minus two cylinders.

yes, the v10 has the "plug fart" issues. Sometimes more so than the V8 triton engines. 99% of the time though, it is due to improper torque on the spark plugs. The deck was somewhat thin on the triton engines for several years. I do believe they have improved the design though, the problem is not nearly as common as it used to be in the early years.

I got to put a couple hundred miles on the new 6.7L Ford today. All I can say is, if this motor is even half way decent Ford will have something going for them. Shifts super smooth, has tons of power to boot, rode good and got pretty decent mileage. Although I'd hate to work on that conglomerate mess they call an engine we'll really put it to the test this up coming winter. This whole urea thing is stupid. I see alot of headaches in the next couple of months for me.
