first post. Looking at a 2nd or 3 gen in near future
Hello. I am thinking about getting a diesel for my next work truck. I am leaning towards the 2nd gen with a 5 speed. It doesn't have to be 4X4 or short bed.
I haul a lot of old cars, trucks from fields and old junk yards my current work truck has been faithful but it is a single cab and my boys now 6&9 and are growing so throwing the bags for overnight trips on the passenger floor board is no longer viable. This current work truck is a 95 chevy 3/4 ton 350 automatic. There has been some times where I had to go make several trips when I wondered if I had a diesel and rented or borrowed a goose-neck I could have saved time and money. The old 60 buick I hauled in last spring that probably weighed close to 5000 lbs plus trailer it really made it work in some hills. I remember my buddy's 06 duramax pulling a 55 sedan with ease.
I would usually have this truck hooked up to a car trailer and driven between 5-10k per year. I don't want a new truck for this and I don't want this truck to be a daily driver but something that can tow my rusty gold or junk home.
Any suggestions for older trucks besides looking for a stock one without exhaust through the bed and 20 empty monster drink cans on the floor boards? I've read a little where people complain about the quad cabs rattling doors so should I seek out a club coupe? Or should I save some coin and get a 03-04 model? Besides the obvious blow by test let me know what to check for.

Hi David, welcome to the site.
Honestly, I own an 01 with the 24V and I have many amigo's with newer versions. I'd look for an 05 4 door, common rail with lower miles if possible.
Just a really good version of a really good idea...
