engine oil questions

I just started a new job at an international dealer, and i can get oil really cheap now , but i need to know whats best.

They have rotella T ( is this synthetic? or is it available in both dino and syn. oil?)
Mobil 1 delvac
and esso XD3

I haven't taken the time to see if they are synthetics or not, are they all synthetics? or are they all available in both dino and syn. oils?

Alright,

All these oils come in both dino and synthetic versions

Rotella T multigrade 15W40 is a conventional dino oil
Rotella T Synthetic 5W40 is synthetic (but only group 3)

Mobile Delvac 1300 multigrade is a conventional dino oil
Mobile 1 Delvac 5W40 is FULL synthetic (Group 4 PAO or true synthetic)

Esso XD-3 15W40 multigrade is conventional dino oil
Esso Xd-3 0W40 is synthetic (Group 4 PAO or true synthetic)

Hope that helps.

oils

All the oil companies make a product book start collecting them and reading their literature on the different oils and do some comparisons on them. To see what might be best for you.

The Esso and Mobil are gonna be very close to the same. I have always used Delvac, and have used Mystic 15w-40's No problems, and dad runs Rotella dino...with no problems

Chevron invented the diesel oil as we know it with Delo. I would not hesitate to trust any of thier products

I am so proud!

No one brought up using A**Oil! All those guys with the must be on vacation! I just love it when someone starts preaching about A**oil. I usually get them to quit by asking them to make sure they tell the potential buyer of their used truck they didn't change the oil for 50,000 miles. I'm sure the buyer would pay double for the truck knowing that!

Good, proper & timely maintenance ( according to manufacturers recommendations) is a good thing for resale value. I was just offered $15K trade in for my "99" with 175K on it from the dealer. I have a log showing every oil change, brake pad, tire rotation, etc.

I'll have to take a gander around there tomorrow, it's been a month since i took a good look , i can't remember what the weights were , but i beleive the XD-3 they had stocked was 15-40, i do beleive i saw some 0-40 of something there , i'll check it out tomorrow.

Edit- tomorrow won't work , i'm out on a service call all day , driving that POS v10. ?I'll take another look asap.

of the 3 , whats the best to be running? i can't remember which one , but one of them was even available in 5 gallon pails

kcatsun,

If you can get the Esso XD-3 in 0W40 flavor...its much better than the others as it is a Group IV synthetic meaning that it is 100% synthetic (which makes it virtually the same as Mobile 1, or Amsoil)

Yup, I have used the Delo sysn quite a bit, mostly because its one of the few oils I can get where I live. I usually use it in the winter since its 5W40. Just remember that its a group 3 and not in the same class as the group IV syns. You cannot technically extend change intervals with synthetics unless you want to jump into a full blown oil testing routine. You mAY be able to strecth a few thousand miles, but thats about it (JMO)

I dont believe for one minute that youll have problems switching to syn at 135k.

Alright , i got a minute to look around today , and now i am even more confused they have rotella in 3 diesel flavours rotella t SB - 0-40 ( i only saw one jug of this , not a big seller i presume) they only have XD-3 in dino flavour , BUT they were going to check on getting some syn 5-40 in , and they said it would be a little bit cheaper than the rotella 5-40 syn, which was 22 bucks per 4L jug ( my price btw ) and that is alot better than the $8 per liter full syn we had been huying

They only had rotella T dino in the 5 gallon pails, and one pail of mobil 1 delvac, also not a real big seller.

Some general recommendation on oils from me- (and this is just my personal opinion): Reagardless of brand and synthetic/dino or whatever, the viscosity is just one factor- the API class is often overlooked, and this can lead to very bad results.

kcatsun,

Just to be thorough....the Esso XD-3 synthetic is 0W40 not 5W40 and the price is about what it costs out here.

Also, Ive never seen or heard of the 0W40 Rotella.

one more thing, if the Mobile 1 Delvac (are you sure its not Delvac 1300??) is reasonable. Go for the gold and get the Mobile.

the rotella sb 0-40 is a semi "synthetic blend"... the xd-3 0w40 is good oil... i am running that.. i can get that at wallyworld for like $22 [cdn funds]... apparently, if you go to noco or similar distributor you can get it for less than $18 [again, cdn funds 4L jug]

i need to go to a distributor and get 3 cases of 0w40 xd-3 [hopefully for the less than $18 price]

How about the 22L pail?? In Alberta, its just over $5 a litre if you buy the pail.
