I am not trying to start a war here. I am a member at www.dieselplace.com and have read at least 100 reports of tragic problems with the dura. The newest being the stock LBZ frying the Ally torque converters and leaving people stranded, and then they talk about how bad dodge trannies are . Register it is free and very interesting. Everyone needs to do it, it will make you glad you bought a dodge. And I know dodge has a lot of problems, still seems to be not near as many and not a severe as the Duramax. Compare the Cummins

Most miles on Duramax 456,000

little info from the place i seen today,

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just wondering who has the most miles. I have 20k on mine know. I work at a dealer and we service a 01 dually with 456,000 miles on it. Original tranny and engine. Pulls a 40' car trailer all over the country. His hour meter won't even register anymore it shows up in the tech 2 as some crazy decimal.

http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60996

just to show the motor is showing the signs of longativity

the number that fredw posted is impressive, however we have a 5.7 liter suburban(gas) that comes to our shop with 320,000 on the origional engine and tranny. we also have a mercedes diesel with over 600,000. any engine with proper maintenence, and highway driving with consistent rpm can last a long time. so seeing that milage out of that truck as a work or farm truck 10 years from now would be much more impressive.

Sounds like our local sports teams bragging about a one game winning streak.

for every serious problem you can find aa i bet i can find one here, no more no less problems with the two, and i bet there is more bombed maxes then cummins between the two since the max came out!!

there are a few local heavy haulers from my home town that will be entering the 1/2million mark, ya they had a few injector problems, but that is not the engine problem, and the new cummins have had the same problems

Is that a fabricated problem the Cummins guys came up with like the warping heads?

As far as Duramax reliability when modded I can't complain. My truck runs 12.0@112 in the 1/4 mile and can compete with any truck in the street class pulling and is still totally streetable and able to tow trailers. My truck has a little over 108000 miles on the odometer, 113000 actual if you take into account the larger tires. To date the only issues I've had is a coolant return line from the stock turbo weaping coolant (fixed myself) and the CP3 pump was acting weak (smoked less than it used to) so I replaced it with a slightly modded one. I ran w/o a lift pump for a long time and that probably led to shortening the life of the CP3. I haven't had injector, head gasket, or any other motor problems after 199 passes at the dragstrip and 104 hooks sledpulling with the mods in my signature below.

We will see in a few years how well the Duramax's hold up, and maybe they will have a million mile club like the Cummins.
I have heard of Dodge car haulers having the sleeves and rings replaced at 600,000 miles and the parts they were to replace looked as good as the new parts.
I have a friend that drives a wrecker and he says that the most common diesel he towes is Dura's with warped heads.

I'll start the list of commonly known Dodge motor/trans problems:

lift pump failures
VP44 failures
cracked "53" blocks
killer dowel pin
5th gear nut backing off on NV4500
47RE
3rd gen CR injectors (20% failure rate according to a pole here on DTR)

Yup, yer right......
But pretty near every one of them (except the cracked block of course) can be repaired in the owner's driveway with common hand tools in less than 8 hours.

It takes 'bout that long to pull stuff off so you can see the engine on the other trucks.

Yea, it's a good thing the I6 design of the Cummins makes it easier to work on because it will need lots of work.

Yup 89,000 miles and a couple of lift pumps and one (already knew it was going 'cuz it was a weak '99) injection pump.
It's almost broken in now.
It hasn't seen the inside of the dealer since the day it rolled off the lot with 6 miles on it.
I predict I'll still have many, many, many, many more miles to go.

in the last 8 years my family has owned 5 dodge truck, I will list all failures:

93 3500- none, sold @ 300K
96 3500- 5th gear nut, sold @300K,
97 2500-5th gear nut, rubber hood trim came off and melted electronics, shut off seleniod, still running strong
00 3500-none 185K
02 2500-none 85K mild mods, box, exhaust, BHAF

all have been used to pull regularly, all have been great trucks, have never owned another diesel.

a total of $6,000 est. of repairs( not counting maintenance) for about 500,000 miles

I dont think you can beat that.
